This is my first attempt at refinishing a BP rifle. I bought this thing at a gun show and the barrel was in kinda bad shape and I didn't like the color of the stock so I did some rebluing and I stripped and stained the stock a little darker

I know the rifle is a CVA, and I'm pretty sure it's a hawken of some kind. If anyone has any information on what it is exactly I would like to know.

It doesn't have a patch box on it is the reason I ask.

If it has 2 barrel wedges on the stock and a pewter end cap it's most likely a CVA mountain rifle. Sometimes the ramrod has pewter ends also. Some Calibers didn't have patchboxs.

When the pictures were up it was obviously a Mountain Rifle. The Mountain Rifle came in .45 and .50 in a 15/16" barrel and was a great shooter. There was a Big Bore Mountain Rifle in .54 and .58 in a 1" barrel and did not have a capbox.

From the capbox shape it looks to be an early one and could have a Douglas barrel. If the barrel has "Made in USA" stamped on it, it has a Douglas barrel.

Mine has given me thirty years of heavy use and great service.
