I've never figured out the history behind that type of sight. I assume it's a form of the gargoyle, such as is so frequently found on the butt cap of pistols. That has a long history, but I don't know if its use as a sight is historical or someone's cool modern idea.

A very beautiful English fowler and one to take great pride in ownership! Regarding that front sight, I know I have seen pictures of an original somewhere that had a very similar "grotesque" mask type sight on it. Memory is that it was from France made very early 18th century. I will dig around and see if I can find it.
