well this has taken far longer then i anticipated. work keeps gettin in the way but in between i manage to get a little at a time accomplished. started with trying something new for the stock and it turned out well enough that other new to me finishs turned my head. here is the stock after i wrapped it with bakers string and put the stain to it. after this i litely sanded and began the oil finish. turned out like this

then i listened and gawked at the different vineger and naval jelly metal finishs on here and decided i had to try my hand at this. the furniture started out in a vineger bath that lasted for 7 days. then i cleaned them with warm dish soap and wiped them down after which i poured oil over them in a kettle and turned the heat on till they were around 200 degree's then let them cool overnite in their wesson oil bath. here is what they turned out like.

so this is as far as ive gotten so far. gonna try to wrap the barrel with the fine cotton bakers string and get some pvc pipe to soak the barrel in and see how it turns out. really hope it gets that demascase look to it. oh and im gonna tear down the lock that i was gonna do anyway and stone the surfaces so they will not be so grainy feeling and while it is apart i think ill vineger it and the hammer as well. more news at 11 so to speak.

finished the furniture but the lock and hammer were in too much contrast with their case hardening to let slide so i un fastened the lock and dissasembled it and into the bath went the hammer and lockplate. after 7 days i retrieved them and washed em up in soapy water and gave em a warm bath in the oil. after cooling the oil overnite i took the plate out and began wiping it down only to discover a big rust spot on the forward edge of the plate.

first off i recon the surprise is a given as i thought that the vineger would disolve the rust and secondly i never seen the rust to begin with...must have been under the color that the factory at lyman put on it.

anybody ever experience this before? now i have to un-assemble the dang thing as i thought i could live with it but nooooo CANT!!! so i guess ill sand it whith paper till i get it gone and re-vineger and oil bath it and see if it stays gone.

also finally got a 2 inch hunk of pvc and end caps to dunk my barrel in. will the vineger disolve the glue on pvc ?

I really have very little experience working on guns, but just a thought - you may want to finish the tang along with the barrel, so they look seamless when the gun is assembled. More experienced people on this forum may disagree with me.

Other than that, I think it's looking good.

well this keeps intriguing me with the time it is taking. now ive soaked the barrel for 7 days and when i took it out,,the string that i wrapped it with has left no marks whatsoever. just turned the barrel a little brownish color that i assume will scrub rite off. no marks that i had anticipated so back into the tube for another 7 days with fresh vineger. any thoughts on this barrel? i wonder if the baking cotton string is keeping the vineger away from the metal enough that it is going to take longer for the effect i want. hum???????

I would be using the string to hold the vinegar on the metal and not to shield it. You might try wrapping the barrel in cotton t-shirt material, and then wrapping it with the string. Then soak everything and let it sit. The string will keep vinegar against the barrel and the reaction will leave darker stripes. You may need to "re-wet" the string or unwrap, rinse, and re-wrap it until you get the effect you want.

I think Karwelis did a good description of the vinegar wrap a while back when I was researching for my GPR....

hey if you need to talk to me give me a PM and i'll walk you through it! or do you all ready have my # either way. what i would do for the "effect" that your looking for is wrap that barrel with the cotton string, and soak it with vinegar, then wrap it in the t-shirt rags, also soaked with vinegar, then leave the whole mess in the sun, lose the tube!!!!

well here it is. finally got er done. wow it took all i had to just let er soak in the tube but after 14 days when i couldnt stand it anymore i took it out and unwrapped it. wowww i really like the little engraving it left on the flats. when i scrubbed it with the wifes scratch pad...[ i know i know ] hey come on i replaced it!!! the corners of the flats lost their etching but the flats kept them just rite. i hope the photos bring this out to see;

Hi Bigted.

It looks really good. I would have a really hard time submerging the metal in vinegar that long.

I have made stain for stocks using vinegar to dizzolve hack saw blades. By the time I am ready for the stain, the saw blades are gone and the vinegar is a nice rusty brown.

Hope she shoots good.

Don.
