went to the range again today and man was it ever a good day to go. it was sunny and a warm 70 degrees out with a nice gentle breeze.
i tried a couple different loadings with varying degrees of success. first i tried Many Klatch's idea of reducing my powder load. this was successful to some extent. here are my results:
-
80 grains 2F with 0.02 cotton patch: this works "ok" but the grouping was still pretty wide.
-
70 grains of 3F with a 0.02 cotton patch: this load worked the best out of the loads i tried with the standard cotton patching.
-
80 grains of 2F with 0.018 pillow ticking: this load worked much better then the same load using the 0.02 cotton patching.
-
90 grains of 2F with 0.018 pillow ticking: this load shot the best out of all the loads with a sub 3" group at 50 yards.
-
100 grains 2F with 0.018 pillow ticking: onley shot 3 rounds at this load but it seemed to shoot the same as the previous 90 grain load.
sadley i onley had a few of the 0.018 pillow ticking patches which seemed to work much better then the standard cotton patches. the cotton patches dont seem to hold up very well to the rifling while the pillow ticking seems much stronger. i need to hit the fabric store and see if i can find some pillow ticking thats around 0.02.
here are two targets from my trip, the first has 5 hits and the second has 6 hits: (these groups were done with 70 grains 3F and 0.02 cotton patch)
i should mention that the deep radius grooved rifling makes loading very easy regardless of fouling. i will certainly use another Rice barrel for my next gun!
