Artistically utilitarian, elegant simplicity, charmingly robustic? It's everything a jeager should be! Great "big bore" caliber for hunting large game, too. I really love that trigger guard - it just adds to something "jeagerish" to the whole package.

Which range?

issaquah sportsmen, i love that range. the range masters are cautious but friendly and onley yell at people doing stupid things. they call regular cease fires and lend half the range every third sunday to the cascade mountain men.

Skagits monthly shoot is this sunday, but after 2 in a row I have one weekend to do everything.

Congrtulations!
Very very nice!
Looking forward to your range report.

As a couple of guys mentioned - I thought I was over with wanting to have one....

if youve been thinking about a Jaeger but arent sure. these rifles are outstanding, mine is half way between a civilian rifle and a military rifle. the stock and wrist is very stout but it thins out to an elegent forstock and barrel. the swamped barrel gives the gun a very centered balance point putting all the guns weight right between your hands. the gun is not so light that recoil will be an issue but its also not so heavy that it will be a pain to carry or shoot off hand.

im leaving for the range in about 30 min (when my buddy gets ready). so i will be letten yall know how she behaves.

ok range report time.

i fired about 30 shots at the range trying a couple different powder loads and brands. the main load i used was 90 grains of 2F KIK. as it was the gun fired VERY low, about 10" low at 25 yards and about 12" low at 50 yards. so i did a ton of work with a file and got it about 4" low at 50 yards by the end of the range trip. to get the gun to shoot 4" low i had to take off 2/3 of the front sight! im gonna shoot it a bunch more before i take any more of the front sight off as its getting too small to be useable. it still shoots about 4" to the right but i will fix that once i get the elevation sorted out. the lock on the gun is easily the best lock ive ever dealt with! a clean reliable spark every time with no need for wiping or vent picking. at the end of the range trip the flint still looked almost new!

the gun is having an issue eating patches though. accuracy isnt stable and all the patches im finding have torn spots on em where they are meeting the rifling. they are oxi-yoke 60-69 cal 0.020 patches. hopefully as i shoot the gun more the barrel will break in and start shooting right.

aside from accuracy the gun is seriously fun to shoot! the wide stock makes even loads over 100 grains comfortable to shoot. the low muzzle weight does make the gun buck like a rodeo bull with chargers 100 grains and up though. but even if the muzzle jumps 6" the stock design makes then real gentle on the shooter.

Seeing as how this is a 58 caliber gun 90 grains sounds like too much powder. Try starting around 60 grains. I'll bet at around 75 grains you will find a sweet spot.

Sweet looking gun , it sounds like fun. A couple hundred passes down the bore with fine steel wool around your rod might help your patch problem. Should be a deer slayer. :)

went to the range again today and man was it ever a good day to go. it was sunny and a warm 70 degrees out with a nice gentle breeze.

i tried a couple different loadings with varying degrees of success. first i tried Many Klatch's idea of reducing my powder load. this was successful to some extent. here are my results:

-80 grains 2F with 0.02 cotton patch: this works "ok" but the grouping was still pretty wide.
-70 grains of 3F with a 0.02 cotton patch: this load worked the best out of the loads i tried with the standard cotton patching.
-80 grains of 2F with 0.018 pillow ticking: this load worked much better then the same load using the 0.02 cotton patching.
-90 grains of 2F with 0.018 pillow ticking: this load shot the best out of all the loads with a sub 3" group at 50 yards.
-100 grains 2F with 0.018 pillow ticking: onley shot 3 rounds at this load but it seemed to shoot the same as the previous 90 grain load.

sadley i onley had a few of the 0.018 pillow ticking patches which seemed to work much better then the standard cotton patches. the cotton patches dont seem to hold up very well to the rifling while the pillow ticking seems much stronger. i need to hit the fabric store and see if i can find some pillow ticking thats around 0.02.

here are two targets from my trip, the first has 5 hits and the second has 6 hits: (these groups were done with 70 grains 3F and 0.02 cotton patch)

i should mention that the deep radius grooved rifling makes loading very easy regardless of fouling. i will certainly use another Rice barrel for my next gun!

i tried but the pics come out blurry, my camera is kinda cheap. the picture of the barrel and rifling was sent to me by the builder. my camera wont take pictures of metal without tons of glare.
