I purchased this at an auction of a friends father’s collection years and years ago. He was a great guy, super knowledgeable and had many really nice period rifles. I couldn’t afford any of his complete guns, but did nab this for under $30. I thought you all would like to see it.
It looks just like it did the day I bought it decades ago. I assume it’s a target barrel of some sort, but is completely unmarked, or at least as far as I can tell through the patina.
After I won the bid, I had quite the cadre of old gents almost accost me about selling it. If they were a bit less abrasive, maybe I would have. If they wanted it so bad, they should have outbid a young whippersnapper like myself (back then). Anyway, dimensions listed below (it’s pretty massive):
Length: 32”
Weight: 12.2 pounds
Across flats at breech: 1 7/16”
Diameter at muzzle (round): 1 3/8”
Bore: (best I can tell) 0.625”
It does have a dovetail that looks like it was filled, has two unfilled sight dovetails, has two ramrod thimbles attached directly to barrel with no rib.
Hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I do. Maybe someday I’ll work on it. Any guesses as to its era and or lineage would be appreciated.
