Aquired used TC New Englander. Nipple appears to have been cross threaded. I want to chase the threads.

What size are they?

1/4x28. you need to order a nipple made for a t/c side lock. they are shorter than redular nipples. i would suggest you get a musket convertion nipple. use a bottoming tap

if your threads are too mangled to get by with just chasin' them, Track of the Wolf sells oversize nipples & taps to fix the problem.

Sorry rj but all of that is :bull:
T/C's use a standard 1/4x28 nipple and musket caps are needed for muskets not rifles.
There is no gain with musket caps and folks have to bend the hammer to make them work on T/C and Lyman factory rifles.

The best answers here require a few questions.

The threads are the mechanical means to hold the nipple in the breech plug. If the threads are severely compromised, then you need to get an oversized nipple.

I'm of the opinion that you need an oversized nipple. Take your gun to a black powder gunsmith for a look at the nipple seat.

If it is the thread of the nipple that is crossed threaded get a new nipple. Hot shot nipples are really nice and you can buy them about any where. If it is the treads in the barrel and they aren't to badly cross threaded you may be able to get a 1/4 X 28 tap and straighten them out. DANNY

strange, then why are nipples listed for just t/c rifles. I have used musket caps on all my rifles.
Nipple, 1/4-28 thread, short for T/C rifles, #11 CCI cap, stainless steel ӢCone length: 0.300"
ӢThread journal length: 0.200"
ӢOverall length: 0.500"
ӢDiameter of base: 0.307"

I have no idea rj,
I've been grabbing 1/4x28 nipples from several makers off the shelf and using them in T/C's Hawken and Renegade models for over 30yrs and never had a problem.
I'm pretty sure the nipple for the Seneca, Cherokee and Patriot are short but I've never had any of those.

I have some thoughts about folks that are convinced they need musket caps on rifles, but I won't bother to share at this time.

FWIW musket nipples, with their wings and larger size, are easier to grab and handle with cold, stiff fingers, at least for me. I used to use them for deer hunting with my New Englander, but found a round leather cap holder for #11's and use that now. Worked for me at the time, YMMV.

Musket caps fall off a heck of alot easier. #11's set off a charge on a new englander without a hitch. Have never had a miss fire with a hot shot nipple and a RWS #11

Fall off a correctly sized cone? Never happened to me - but I wasn't trying to use a musket cap on a #11 nipple cone. Track and other vendors sell nipples that use musket caps but have 1/4X28, 6mm, etc, threads for those wanting to use the larger caps.

I will agree that you don't need to use a musket cap for the extra priming flash. I don't need HotShot nipples either for reliable ignition, I use RWS 1075's for hunting and CCI 11's with standard factory and aftermarket nipples for the my target rifles and don't have any issues with hang or misfires, but that's me, YMMV.

I do not understand what you are saying there. Are your top hat musket caps not split on the sides? And no one said anything about putting a musket cap on a #11 nipple :idunno:

I'm saying I have not, as in never, had a musket cap fall off of a nipple, when hunting, at the range, or doing CW reenactments. They fit snug, at least for me.

Your experiences with musket caps are different?

Thanks y'all. Chased the threads after cleaning everything up. Nipple channel was full of former owner's crud.

I was so disappointed when I thought I had buggered the threads on my Christmas present. In the mail tomorrow to Mr. Hoyt for re bore work.
If things to go very well, maybe I can use it in the late turkey season.

Not on here for a peeing contest. I am simply stating my experience with them. Maybe, I am just holding my mouth wrong when I use them :surrender:

Today it is a matter of being able to shoot. #11 caps are rarely available these days so alternatives are needed. I’m looking at musket caps and 209 primers.
