Natural dye Capote.

I have a Hudson Bay Striped Blanket I was thinking about turning into a Capote for deer hunting. I would love to dye it using natural materials.
Has anyone has dyed this blanket using natural dyes such as a walnut dye?

I was also worried about the blue stripe since deer notice blue more than other colors, even if it was dyed. Or am I being silly about that?
I have a nice blue blanket I was originally going to use but since I want it for deer hunting I decided against it.

Animals are color blind. I wear all white (well yellowed) canvas.
They still fall right into the freezer.
More out folks might complain you ruined a good HB blanket.

I'm not sure I'd use blue. Keep that blanket for camp and maybe find another to dye to make the capote.

Those HB blankets are ridiculously expensive
Cheaper buy Wool material.

I think if it were mine I'd leave it as is, wool blankets don't take dye well. Birds are the only thing that most people hunt that can see in color. Deer are more motion-orientated I've had them walk right past me when standing still if the wind is in my favor.

I've had deer walk within a couple feet of me while wearing blaze orange vest & hat . Don't know what colors they can or can't see but, take a black & white pik of someone in blaze orange & they'll still stick out like a sore thumb.

An old boxy reservation period capote in candy stripe. This is a Whitney dyed brown
Deer are colorblind but can see a big white box
Keep in mind old hunters match coats and most commercial made capotes were white.
Movement is more seeable than color. And even bright colors can blend in to the woods
But I do like brown and tan and dark blue

tenngun honestly, I wouldn't not have done that. If one is looking for a color that blends into the natural setting there are better options.
My first capote was a brown with a black stripe, I outgrew that one in my old age and sold it here on the forum. currently I'm making one in gold with a beige stripe. There are many HB and Wittney's to be had that are much better suited to that purpose.

That coat is about thirty, I can’t say I would or would not do it today as I wouldn’t try making a coat from a candy stripe now

Ok new plan I’m on the hunt for a grey HB blanket for my capote. I know about movement and hunting I mostly just didn’t like the style of bright color capotes. I do love the grey

I would say to avoid the blanket and buy a heavy woolen fabric. Most old capotes were made commercially via true tailors or cottage industry and they were fitted.

I got that at Townsends
It’s pretty heavy and already denser then a HB blanket
Joanna fabrics also has it but I had trouble following that site
Crazy crow has stroud
I like a woolen lining also

I can agree on the multi-stripe, it's my least favorite of all the colors available in HBs and witney's.
I have a sizable collection of blankets and not one of them is multi-striped.
