Any Navy arms fans out there ? I currently hunt with a hawken hunter .58 and occasionally my Buffalo hunter, 110 gr 3f , 575 round ball and tight patch produces exceptional accuracy out of the hawkens, and 65 gr. Swiss 1.5 and an old shilo mould .582 Minnie at 530 gr out of the Buffalo hunter. Love my old navy arms.

i like the Navy Arms rifles: Bought a nice .50 caliber Navy Arms Hawken that had a roached bore. Mr. Hoyt bored it out to .54 caliber with rounded grooves and 1/56 " twist. Firing patched round balls, that rifle makes 1 1/4-1 1/2" five shot groups at 78 yards.

I’ve always wanted one of those, especially after reading about the owner of navy arms adventures in Africa. They are a little heavy for the average deer hunt though. You should post some pictures of your rifle.

Sorry about the poor quality pics, my hawken hunter is on the bottom and my Buffalo hunter is on the chair

I really don’t understand why folks don’t like these rifles as much as T/c or even cva. They in my opinion are atleast as good if not better than cva of the same era. I have a new in box navy arms hawken I have tried to sell for 250.00 and got zero interest. I can bring myself to take any less. They are definitely a great value for what they generally sell for.

They are excellent rifles and built strong. I had a hawken hurricane and that was a super sweet rig.

I was just gifted .58 navy arms hawken and was putting together what i need to shoot round balls. i have been reading everyone’s responses but looking for more info. what thickness patch? .570 or .575? what cap? i was given 2f and 3f powder and old lee minie mold that would need a sizer. so just looking to go out and shoot

That's a beautiful rifle. I only have the .50s (still looking for a .58), but they really like a Lee R.E.A.L. 320gr over about 85 grains of FFFg. You should be able to shoot .570 or .575 balls just fine, adjusting your patch thickness to accomodate the difference.

That said though, they were designed with conicals in mind so the twist rate will be faster than ideal for round ball. It'll still shoot fine, but you will probably get better accuracy from a conical.
