Navy Jelly barrel/funiture?

Gents, In the process of a build figured the finish for the barrel and funiture would be blued, but kinda leaning away from that now. Would like to know more about the Navy Jelly process used on barrel and steel furniture. If the gray/blue steel is what you get with it that is probably the way I will go. Need to know if there is any prep to the finish I need to do. I have a section of barrel I can test, thanks.

Just curious anyone ever poured a pewter butt plate actually on the stock? Just thought of that going to lunch and one of those hummm wonder if it would work things.

Navel Jelly doesn't need any special preparation.
Just leave it on the metal longer than the instructions say so it can eat some of the steel.

I haven't heard of a pewter butt plate ever being used.
IMO, pewter is much too soft to be used there.
It will get scratched and dinged up every time the gun is loaded.

Zonie. I guess that might be the reason for not using pewter on the butt plate. No experience with the stuff but will have some in a few months.
I will try some jelly on the piece of barrel and see what we end up with then go from there to Jelly or not to Jelly. LOL

If the naval jelly drys on the steel, you can wet it with a spray bottle of water. Had that problem when humidaddy was very low (15 to 25)

I filed & sanded it all down (draw filed the barrel), wiped it down with alcohol, then I gave it a good coat of jelly and left it sit for a day, rinsed it off and repeated the application a few times until I got the color I was looking for. Used a foam ear plug to block the muzzle and threaded hole for the touch hole liner.

I think it's lightened up a little since I did it.I'm also just keeping the innards cleaned & oiled and letting the outside to develop a bit of a patina on it's own...

IMO, pewter is much too soft to be used there.

Brass isn't exactly tough stuff either.
Plus, there are a lot of alloys that can/do pass as pewter. Some might be as tough/tougher as brass.

One of my rifles has a silver plated butt plate. Can see on "photos" Plains rifle.
