Want to make another range rod, but Track does not sell 1/2" hickory. Anyone know where I can get a good one?
thanks

Step 1: Go down to your local hardwood supplier, pick out the straightest grained board you can find, give supplier a sufficient amount of money in trade for said board, then bring it home.

Step 2: Cut board at desired length, then take hatchet and mallet, froe, or other tools and split out a piece large enough to get a 1/2" dowel out of. Use spokeshave, pocket knife, rasp or whatever you have to turn chuck of spit wood into a dowel, following grain as much as possible.
Heat over stove and straighten.

Step 3: Add any attachments, sand and finish.

Use any left over pieces for ramrods, arrows, axe handles, etc. :)

FYI, Dan Putz bought out Steve Bailey’s ramrod business. You can contact Dan by calling him at 573-768-6920.

I bought some and they are sooooooo straight and with straight grain, that on some I had to look really hard to even find the grain, or any runout. In addition to a great product, Dan’s manner of doing business was just as great!

My best wishes also are extended to Steve Bailey; may his health and future endeavors be as well! Steve served the muzzleloader community for many years with great ramrod blanks!

Check out Dixie Gun works. I just ordered a dozen 48 inch hickory ramrod blanks ranging in size from 5/16 - 7 /16. They also list them in 1/2 inch diameter stock number RP1207.

Thanks, I already did, but I only needed one. They sell more than one to protect in freight. Track will sell one, but they don't have 1/2"

Despite my frequent rantings about ram rod safety, a 1/2" rod is a pretty sturdy stick. Type of wood is less a consideration than with a 5/16". Make a rod to suit yerself from whatever wood you can find locally. I'm sure you can do it.

Check out this site...

October Country, Link to Listing of Hickory Ram Rods (click here) with the 1/2" size listed. There was a post about the high quality of these on here about a month or so back, and I was really pleased with the 3/8" one I got.

Good luck.
