What kind or strap would look best for this style of hunting bag ? I'm trying for the 1770 era. All comments are valued. Thanks

Can't go wrong with jute or hemp.I make very similar bags with both kinds and they both look good.By the way thats a good lookin bag!

Go to Wal-Mart or if you know a furniture upholster go there and ask for hemp strapping it should work great. Don't worry if its to wide just fold it and stitch to the size you like. Great looking bag I would have made the corners a little rounder though to keep little things from getting lost in them. Nice work.

If you have more of that hide, use it! If not, you can get veg tan strapping from most leather suppliers. (belt blanks)
If you have two more of those rings, you can make a dandy double ring slide buckle for your strap.

I think leathermoose is talking about the rings that are on some belts. You put the strap up and under the rings and they hold it in place. I have a few shorts that come with a belt like that.

Oh, man, now I have to describe the darned thing!
These have been found on horse tack dating to the bronze age. Very simple to make; if you've ever seen the cinch binding on a western saddle, you've seen one.
Bear with me, here. I don't have one in front of me, although I've been making them for a long time.
Stitch two rings into a loop on the end of a strap. The rings will lay along side each other. Take another strap and run over the closest ring to you, down through it, and back between the rings. If you do it correctly you'll be looking at the backside of the strap that you threaded through. Friction holds them in place.
Darn, that sounds wrong. I'll go home and look at one and get back to you tomorrow.
Getting old ain't for sissies!

Good looking effort, your sewing and seam work is good. Now if you can do something with the bright orange chrome tanned look it will be a lot more period. 1770 leather was oak tanned or maybe oil tanned. I made the same mistakes when I started out. If you can dye the leather a dull brown or black, it would be better.

Many Klatch

I like to check out Goodwill and Thrift Shops - many times you find a nice woven cotton belt that works well for gun slings, bags or garters. I've picked up several over the years for a dollar or less.
Ageed, it you've got more of the leather you made the bag out of - use it.
hope this helps, :hatsoff:

That is a real nice bag, I like to have the flap about 4" wider than the bag, seems to keep the wet out better when the bag is full, just my thoughts
