After a frustrating day at the range,I need some advice.Shooting my 50 T/C Hawken for the first time, I could not adjust the rear sight low enough. With the sight bottomed out ,I'm still hitting about 8 inches too high. I was shooting 90 gr. of ff and a 320 gr maxi-ball. I was just getting ready to reduce the load a little when the cleaning jag got stuck and snapped off at the threads.(spit patching between every shot)It took a while to remove....removing the nipple and pouring some 3f in the chamber and shooting the jag out. Also...the spent caps had to be pryed from the hammer between shots. It seems that the lock inletting is too deep ..pulling the lock too far into the stock, thus causing poor alighnment between the hammer and nipple.Any of these problems fixable or should I just ship it back to T/C?

Send it back. You need permission from them first. They're on the web.

With the paper TC has behind their guns there is no reason to fiddle with anything on them, like Harry says contact them and send it back.

My TC 50 Hawken only likes 370gr Maxis, The 320gr Maxis shot high and the groups were not exceptable. I was also using 100grs of Triple Seven powder with that 370gr Maxi and my groups at 100 yds off a rest were 3 shots in 1 1/4". :)
Your gun has a lifetime warranty so give them a call and send it back.

steelerzzz,
I absolutely agree with tg, even if you bought it used. I have
never known T/C to not make something wrong,
right. Just my thought.

Good luck! I was shooting one of their modern muzzys with open sights and had the same problem as you! They could not help me at all and now i have to spend money on new sights. I was shooting a 405 conical and 80gr RS and 8" high at 50 yards.

You will more than likely need after market sights.

Got to love spending high $$$ on their rifles and having junk sights on them.

Are you saying that TC wouldn't work with you on your problem??? As much as I don't really love TC on some of their rifles, they have always worked with me on my troubles. This doesn't sound right. If your rifle is shooting this way they should give you another barrel if they can't get the gun to shoot right.

I had barrel problems and they made it right with me. The second barrel was a piece of junk, but that was another story!

they sent me new front sight but it was the same one i already had. .470" tall. After that, they said to send the barrel in but with TC, when you get a shooting conical barrel, you keep it!

Nothing wrong with my barrel, they just need to upgrade their sights so you can use the things! I will have to now spend the $50 for new after market sights.

Aught to have a gun smith cut dovetails so i can use blade sights!

Just curious Kentucky windage..would the T/C you are talking about, be the one I swapped with you for the GPR? If so..I'm sorry (I never tried the open sights) I'm really happy with the GPR!

yep thats it! lol. Its not your fault man! Just one of those deals that pop up. There is someone off another forum talking to tc about the sight issue and seeing what they can do about it.

How's the great plains doing for you?

I have several TC's at the moment, 6 all told and I have to pull the caps out of the hammers quite often as when they fire they split and get wedged in to the hammer. What you want to look at is if the hammer hits the nipple square and inside the cup of the hammer if so then it is doing what TC intended it to do. I have been using TC's since the late 1970's and have only had them so I might be missing something here.

I must have been adjusting my sights wrong all these years as to shoot lower I raise my back site which lowers the front of the barrel hence the front sight.

I have just acquired a TC hawken 50 caliber that I took to the range yesterday and it hit where I pointed it. Did find that I needed a cleaning jag and a new wedge pin but a call to TC this morning took care of that.
I also got a seneca earlier this year that I just got the chance to fire and found that its wedge pin was so loose if you turned the rifle on its side it fell out.
Still have to take my cherokee that I got earlier this year out and see what it can do.
I have also gone from ffg to ffg for everything I shoot including my .54 renegade. I also only use magnum caps unless I am using up my regular caps that I use on my 32 and 36 until gone then it will only be magnum caps for me. In the larger calibers you have to use 10-15% less fffg then you use of ffg but that isn't much as I stick to 15% less and round off to the nearest 10. a example is if I normally used 120 grains of ffg I use 100 grains of fffg instead of the 102 that it works out to be so much simpler to remember 100 then 102 grains.

-----if you raise the back sight-it lowers the rear of the barrel which raises the front which makes it shoot higher----- :surrender: :surrender: :surrender:

On my gun the hammer is not striking the cap in the middle of the recess. It is actually striking the edge of the cap. The cap is going off...but it is getting stuck in the hammer almost everytime. Also..the rule of thumb is that the rear sight is to be adjusted in the direction you want the point of impact to go..in other words if you want to hit lower..move the rear sight down. It's just the opposite for the front sight....obviously you can't raise the front sight so your options are limited.....correct me if I'm wrong guys.

yep, screw it to the right ( that brings the poa) down. If you go counter clockwise, that brings it up.

Just noticed on my sight that i am as far over to the right as i can get. Aftermarket sights will be in order to correct this problem.

Seems like the easiest way too lol

LOL...just make sure your tang screw is tight (been there..done that)

yep had another senior moment as i do go right to lower left to raise. sorry
As to the hammer out of the six I have I changed the hammer on only one by heating it bending to hit the hammer better. See if TC will send you new one as heat bending at least for me is interesting at best.
Loose or really tight wedge pins will do some interesting things for you also. Found that out this last monday with another of my TC's knew after the second shot things weren't right and then I turned it on its side and out fell the wedge pin.

Come to think of it..the wedge pin is really tight on this gun...but after it is removed, the barrel is also really hard to remove from the stock. I usually have to tap it with a rubber hammer to pop it loose!

I just wonder with all that pressure on the barrel what it is doing when you fire it. None of mine are that tight and most if you turn them over will fall out of the stock. They are snug but not so tight that I need a hammer of any kind to remove them.
those pesky wedge pins can really do some strange things when you fire the rifle.
Let us know how or what you find as you now have my interest as I wonder if you want one that tight or if the way mine are is better.
