If you decide to strip it, don't sweat it. You've already done all the hard work and you won't have to repeat most of that. I use Stripeaze from the hardware store, but there are several good strippers that work well. You just apply it, let it set, and wipe off the residue. It'll clean down to the bare wood without any sanding.
