My buddy got this rifle for Christmas. His mother in law found it in an antique shop in Marietta Ohio. It appears to be a .36 cal with a percussion lock. The lock may have been replaced at some point, because there are some gaps between the lock and wood. The lock appears old though. The barrel also appears old, however it may have also been replaced at some point. It appears that the original tang inletting has been nicely replaced with a piece of wood, and the new tang inletting is in this piece of wood. The barrel is approx. 40" long. It is a halfstock with a pewter nosecap. The rest of the rifle is trimmed in brass. The sideplate is missing, and it appears that it used to have an oval inlay on the same side as the sideplate. The rear sight is an unusual peep sight, and the front sight has a circular piece of metal around it. The gun appears to be 19th century, and it is in very good shape for its age. I couldn't find any markings on the barrel or lock. I'm no expert, but I think it resembles a Vincent style of rifle. Could it be older than that? Could it have been a flintlock converted to percussion? Any ideas???
