Hi All, I'm looking for a site with examples of folk art from 1720-1800 that will give me some idea's for my powder horns, I just started to scrimshaw some of the horns I've been making and wanted to study before I scratch.

:hmm:

My brother made alot of map horns. He ususally used maps of areas with historical significance like those from the lewis and Clark expadition or historical rendezvous sites.

i dont know of any sites off hand but you could do a historical style map of your area area you hunt or trek or just go often thats what i am going to do

There is a map horn in my brothers gun cabinet with a map of the West Ash Creek area of Nebraska which was his favorite place to hunt. I'm sure it will be a treasured family herlom along with the several guns in the family collection that he built.

I sure wish I could tell you where I got it, but a good book on engraving designs is "A Sketchbook of Colonial and Early American Powder Horn Engraving Designs:1740-1800" by Lee A. Larkin. GREAT BOOK! Also gets Madison Grant's "Powder Horns and Their Architecture", another "must have" for horn makers IMHO. Depending on the area of interest for you on maps, I did a Google and also went to the local library and found maps on my home area for the period of 1750 and another for 1810. Certain things you know you could be added to the map or subtracted as you went from 1750 to 1810. Any rate, I made a map horn (well my daughter did the engraving) of my home area, Ohio from the Ohio River to Lake Erie up the Miami River, St.Mary's and Maumee rivers. The people at the local library really knocked themselves out looking also for this map project.

>Horn Book<
Here's a good book on horns. I did get to look through it and it is nice. I just have a hard time laying out that much for one book.

Try googling 'tattoo flash' or 'tribal designs', or get hold of '1000 Motifs for Crafters', Alan Gear & Barry Freestone, Collins & Brown pub.

Longshot~ :hatsoff:
