Are you planning to build or buy? From previous threads, I would think the 4 screw rifles will fetch more as they have a Douglas barrel marked made in USA. I called last week on one I came across and from the model number was told it was 1978 - 198X , those having the Spanish barrel. CVA restated what others here have said about the 4 screw/Douglass barrels. The one in the picture above is a two screw patch box. I haven't seen a 4 screw yet. On the Deer Creek parts, if they bought up CVA's inventory the barrels may be 1:48 as I believe that's what the last batch were.

Buy, may have found one. Can not find picture of 4 screw! I know I saw picture of 4 screw patch box on fouum, cannot find it here, or anywhere on internet, will have go from memory ! I also appears that parts for cva mf are alomst nonexist. No replacement furnature and little else.

I got some parts a while back from Deer Creek. They may still have some. Also, there are some parts for sale on Auction Arms.

SSI I got my parts from CVA last year. The only part that didn't have (original) was ramrod(6 sided) thimbles ,sent me round ones. Dilly

Howdy all,
I'm shootin' a 32 mountain rifle, caplock, 4 screw patch box, older kit gun, douglas barrel, round thimbles....
I can take pics and post somewhere....
What views do you want???

I have an old mountain rifle I can post a picture of, but it has been uglified to make it look older than it is. It is a four screw with the Made in USA markings on the barrel. Let me know if you want me to post a picture of it.

The gun in the link that was posted is a later gun and it looks like it has been restocked. The mountian rifle is not supposed to have that hump! There is no way is is worth the 255$ it is going for.

Supposedly, Deercreek has the original equipment that the original barrels were made on. I don't know if that is true or not. A kit from him new for the two screw gun is 200$ if you want percussion and 220$ if you want flint. I think he has better wood for a price also.

Opinions vary so price can vary a lot on an original Douglas barreled MR - its a sellers market for them now that they are far and few between. Will come down to how bad you want one and whether the seller knows what they can bring and if willing to wait to get it. Like with anything else, they are "worth" whatever someone is willing to pay for one. I know it took me a long time to find the 45 caplock I bought about 3 years ago. Without digging out receipts can't give you the exact, but I paid between $200-300 for mine. I didn't feel I paid too much because I wanted it. Don't know your why's, but narrowing your search to one built from a kit verses one finished by the factory will also make your search harder unless you get lucky. Wood, shape, inlays and finish may vary too on kit built rifles. No current pictures of mine (factory finished) to post, sorry. But the Spanish barreled flinter pictures posted by Rebel gives you a pretty good idea except for the patch box (just add 2 screws), thimbles (six sided vs round) and lock (if you want percussion).

I have a older 50 cva mt rifle, patchbox 2 screws, and have an old 50 kit, patchbox has 4 screws, barrels are the same..writing wise, also have barrel from a 45 mt. had the 6 sided thimbles, but different writing and patchbox had 2..all are perc. thinkin of having new barrel from kit converted to flintlock by cva, wonder if it be worth it?? rather have an ole cva pennsylvania rifle, wonder where they went  ?... figure i ain't exactly helpin out on the question, but it certainly gets me wonderin what i have...... RC

This is the best I have short of setting up and taking some more pictures. That is harder to do than it sounds and this one isn't too bad. Ignore the big fat guys hands that are covering the lock area. Also it has a synthetic rod in it since I was doing a 30 or so shot shoot that day.

This is what the Douglas barrels have on them.

Hope that helps.

They did have the org Doug rifleing mch but it got shipped a few months ago. Fred :hatsoff: They dont sell these anymore, and the DC barrel was as good as any Ive had.

Runner, think it makes a difference wether rifle is a kit gun or not? my kit gun has 4 screws on the patchbox, but barrel does not say MADE IN USA.guess ya gotta go by the USA print? the other 45 barrel has USA,also had the 6 sided thimbles..old one...THANKS RC

Hello,
Here is the mountain rifle I just finished from a kit i bought at a gunshow. It came with lots of extra wood, and the barrel taped on. Looked like a real beater, but the price was VERY right, so i bought it to mess with. Ends up it is the MADE IN USA barrel, with the 4 screw patchbox. Serial number is 0000184 so I figured it must be one of the earliest ones out there.

Since we have no proof that any were ever fitted with Douglas barrels, I don't think I'd pay extra for the Made in USA markings.

Most of us are willing to accept what CVA themselves quoted from their own company records, or what others who cared enough to do some research on their own have found from other sources. Most also don’t seem to feel the need for three signed and notarized affidavits from who knows who that CVA did use Douglas barrels on the early MR’s to accept it. We’re only talking about a variation, but a variation that has some merit as higher quality manufacture on a model of rifle that many folks here do like to own and shoot. So I’d bet a lot of us MLF members who do like the MR’s would sure like to see your undeniable proof that CVA in fact didn’t use any Douglas barrels on them. Could you please post it here for us?
