I have a .50cal TC Hawken I obtained from someone who did not do to good of a job when they got it as a kit. The barrel is loose when in the channel. I can fit 2 pieces of paper between the channel and barrel and it fits nicely. What can I do to make a permanent fix?

Memphis,
get some Acra Glass. It is a bedding product that will do what you need and is permanent.

I picked up one that was a lot worse. I just used a little modeling clay to make "dams" about 2" apart right behind the slot for the key, then used glass bedding to make a "rest." I still wasn't happy with the back end, so I did go ahead and glass bed the breech end of the barrel as a second step. Rock solid now. Could have glass bedded the whole thing, but I didn't want to do that much messing around.

There's still an unsightly gap down either side of the barrel, but the bud who bought it from me regularly uses it to pin my ears back in our informal shooting matches. Truly one of the more accurate rifles I've ever been around.

What Papa said ... hot very HC/PC, but it will get the job done.

but be careful, make sure to use plenty of release agent... that acraglass is super sticky, tenacious as you know what, and amazingly strong (and that's just when you get it on your fingers, Heaven know what might have happened if the stuff had aqueezed out of where it was supposed to be and onto the rest of the stock)...

I used a similar product "pro bed" that I ordered from Midway USA. It was really easy to mix up and easy to clean up. It takes awhile to dry but even an amateur like me could figure it out and turn out a decent bedding job for a barrel channel that I cut to big.

Glue in a slivers of wood & re-inlet the barrel would be a HC/PC way to repair it. Since it is not a HC/PC rifle, I would use some Acraglas to solve the issue.

Aster freezing the whole gun for 48hrs; it was still stuck. Then used wood chisels to cut the stock from the gun. Made a new stock for that one.

One tip: when you prepare the gun/part for bedding, first clean AND de grease it well. The use the release agent they use for fiber glass (the thick red stuff) and add multiple thin coats. Block all areas where the Acra Gless may flow and lock the gun with modelling clay. The stuff that oozes out you cut off with a plastic knife soon as it becomes stiff. I leave the gun in the stock for 12 hrs, then remove it and leave the bedding to cure for a further 48 hrs.

If you ever have screws coming into contact with the bedding compound, relax and tighten every 3-4 hours while the stuff is curing.
