I just shot my new 1851 Navy today. Accuracy was great and lots of fun to shoot. Even the cleaning was fun. My problem was about 50 percent of the no.11 caps had to be struck twice before ignition. I used a wooden dowel to seat the caps but that did not help. Any ideas on what I should try

You have a cap/nipple interface issue.

You can look at it in a few different directions:
The nipple is too big.
The cap is too small.
A different brand of caps might be in order.

If you only have a tin or two of caps then I suggest you get the Remington #10's, They are made better than the other offerings and they fit every nipple I have set them on.

Now if you have a bunch of caps then I suggest filing down your nipples until they fit just so.

Now when you cap use a dowel or a capper to be sure you set them solidly onto the nipple. What is happening with your pistol right now is the cap isn't set all the way on the nipple and the first hammer blow is seating it in place. With an undersized cap it won't go flush until the hammer strikes it and sets it down solid.

From what I understand the nipples are made for some unknown Italian cap. I've tried different brands and seating techniques but couldn't get my Uberti 1851 to fire reliably.

I think it was Zonie who suggested placing the nipple in the chuck of a variable speed drill. Then slowly spin the nipple while holding a file to it and remove a few thousandths of an inch of material. Keep the same angle that the nipple has just carefully file it down until the caps you've got fit and fire properly. This modification worked well for me.

You could also buy some replacement nipples but the cost is more than I would care to spend.

Most pistol nipples work better with #10 caps. The easiest fix, if caps are hard to find, is replace the nipples with those available for #11 caps.

If you can afford $17.50 plus mailing then I suggest that you call Jim or Suzi in Springfield OR. See your PM for their address line.

There, that wasn't too bad, was it?

Thanks to everyone for your input. I will try the no 10 caps first if that dosent work might try the file trick. Thanks again.

The number 10 caps will be slightly smaller in diameter than the number 11s. Your best approach is to use Remington caps in number 11 as the skirts are a tiny bit thinner than the CCI caps or use your drill and a file to take off the extra material. You only need to take off a little bit of the cone, so go slow.
