I'm writing this from a hotel in Charlottesville, VA, so I don't have any pics or anything, but since y'all were kind enough to give me advice on the use of my new 1858 a few weeks ago, I thought I'd say a bit about how it went.
My shooting was done over New Year's week at my dad's range with steel plates. I used a 25 gr. charge of 3f with .454 rbs and lubed felt wad for most shooting. I also tried 30 gr. 3f. So far, all I have done is load and shoot it at steel so that I could get a feel for how to use it. I'll shoot for groups and work up a load in the next few weeks, once I get home and get some time.
I found that I could easily hit 8" steel plates out to 10-12 yards shooting one-handed almost every time, and POI appeared to be pretty close to POA (given where the paint chipped off). Shots past 15 yards were often misses, but like I said, I haven't shot for groups.
I also got a military style flap holster for Christmas and bought an extra cylinder. Dad and I built a low-tech woods walk this summer. I shot it carrying my flinter for shots from 20 to 80 yards and the 1858 for shots less than 20. Using the holster and extra cylinder, it was really easy to load up both cylinders, keep one in my pocket and switch out along the trail. I just didn't cap until I was standing at the line for the first shot of the cylinder. That way, the hammer always rested on an empty chamber (the one last fired). Good times. Like I said, I'll post some pics soon.
