Dave, I know I speak for all of us here, if you could do a time lapse video on your rifles....carving, or engraving it would help us to see a clear picture.

What's next on your table?

All the parts finished and final assembled, but haven't had a chance to shoot it yet.  I tried the scraping / burnishing stock smoothing technique on this one rather than sanding.  Came out a little "fuzzier" around the carving, but I haven't decided if I like the look or not....I decided not to patina the lock at all.  May change my mind later, but if it gathers "patina" as fast as I do, I won't have to worry about it very much.  This is my third wooden patch box.  I think I have the hang of that now...actually fun to do.

Very nice build.

What vise were you using to hold the gun? The rubber faced yellow one. I also like that triangular vise block you used. Whats a good type of wood to make that out of to prevent marring on maple. Doug Fir OK?

Simply amazing engraving on that rifle.

A lot of amateur builders like me would love a nice post on basic engraving for first timers. If you have the time, it would be gladly appreciated on here.

it's a home depot/lowes style vise....I have one, but because it will release with some up pressure on the knob :shocked2:
but you hand tighten it, and it won't crush wood with the jaws....

hope this helps~

Sulfur,

The vise is (or was) sold by American Tool and it is called a "Quick Vise". If you do a Google search, info will pop up but it looks like they are no longer made. I have two mounted on the edge of my bench but they can be quickly removed by flipping a cam lever in the mack of the mount. They are OK for most things, but are not as solid as a real steel vise. Then again, they have rubber jaws and they don't mar or crush anything either.

The "V" block is just cut out of pine. I'm sure a piece of a 2x4 would work just fine.

I'm going to go curl up in a ball and sit and the corner and cry for a bit. Because I know Mine will NEVER look as good as that. SWEET build.

Once again, she's truly a work of art Dave. I must admit that I sorely envy the gifted skills you have sir.
