I blame Jethro for this. :haha: He had sent me what looks like calf or cow hide scraps with hair on. I figured there was a good possibility that something like this may have been used to make a bag around here so I decided to use a piece for a flap.

I had thought about ordering some pig leather but it made no sense having just about a half of an Elk hide left to play with so I just cut out pieces using my fowler bag pattern. The hair on leather is pretty thin so I decided to back it with a piece of Elk.

I decided I just wanted a simple bag, one with just a double inside pocket on the back panel and no outside pocket on the front panel, that I usually do on this pattern.

The strap took me most of one day to make, I swore after after doing RC's I'd never do another backed strap but I figured I wanted one. :haha: :youcrazy:

I dyed the leather using Fiebing's "Saddle Tan" then wiped the bag down with their Antique finish.

Beautiful Swampy and well constructed. That will be around for a long time.

Turned out real nice Swampy! :hatsoff:

I'm more than happy to share some of the "blame" for work that nice. :haha:

Just when I think my stuff might come close to being half as good lookin' as yours is, you gotta come along and show me up....again.

Impressive.

I'm really interested in that strap, any detailed pics on how it was made?

Thanks for kind words guys, really appreciate it.

The strap was a lot of freaking stitches lol. I have some dark suede leather thats long enough for straps but not really suitable for one but it does make a good backing. So I measured where I thought I needed a nonadjustable strap to be and came up with 50" as it turned out later was the exact same length I did RC's strap. Cutting a 50" strip of the dark suede out, I was then able to use two shorter pieces of the Elk, both at 25". I glued the pieces together and let them sit over night. Then I sat here and spent a lot time stitching them together. I does make a nice strap with an almost padded feel to it but geesh you think the stitching will never end. :haha:

Great work as usual, I may have to try that backed strap thing on the bag I am currently making, if I ever get back to them, you know!
