Hello everybody! I'm a newcomer to this forum and to traditional muzzleloading. I have hunted muzzy season here in NH for quite awhile with an inline, but have long been curious about making the jump to sidelocks. For the past few seasons, I have been helping my old man get his Flintlock in order (50. Cal Pedersoli Frontier). Spurred on by this, and the fact that I have been spending FAR too much time watching the capandball.eu channel on YT, I finally made the jump and picked up my first sidelock, a TC White Mountain Carbine percussion rifle. Took it to my range last weekend with a pile of new supplies and ammo (including actual 2FG black powder), and I'm already in love! I'm now obsessed and looking to learn as much as possible! Look forward to talking (and likely eventually arguing 😆) with you all.

Welcome. Don't be afraid to try FFFg in it. With the short barrel, you will get more complete powder burn and better velocities, especially if you use conicals vice round ball.

Play with this program to see what I mean.

Interesting. I've always read the "conventional" wisdom of 2f for larger bore rifles and 3f for revolvers. But I have seen the forum reports of folks using 3f loads. I may try it at some point. The calculator gives it about a 100 fps velocity difference for the load I was using which may not mean much for terminal performance. Either way, I have more work to do.

The conventional wisdom is mostly wife's tale born from days of yore.

The 100fps might not help in terminal velocity but it does help in the external ballistics. If you use Triple Seven, add 10% to the pressure and velocity results. I have found that to be very close.

Also note the % powder burn. If you use FFg you are getting around 95% with FFFg, same volume, you get 99% with your WMC

See this thread on carbines and chronographed velocities

And this thread. Both will give you some insight on your carbine

Also give this little article by Val Forgett and his Africa hunting guns a read...Note he is using LARGE charges of FFFg in 58 cal.
