Just purchased a new Kibler Southern Mountain rifle with a curly ash stock in .40 caliber from a guy today. It should get here next week sometime. I bought it in the white so I am planning on taking a few days to get it all niced up and then will get a load worked up for it. Anyway, it is my first ever flint rifle and one that I have waited a long time to get. I wanted a .40 caliber because here in my state it is the smallest caliber legal for deer but more importantly one that I can use during deer season while chasing squirrels. I am sure that I will have some questions for you guys when I get it finished, and maybe some on the finishing part of it. Gonna be a fun winter!

This is a Kibler kit I put together with a nice piece of Curly Ash. I sprayed the entire stock with black spray paint first then sanded back which left the open grain very dark, before staining with Laurel MTN stain Honey Maple then Lancaster maple and finishing with Chambers finish. Also used some of Kiblers Bone Black to "warm" up the piece.

I handled the same kibler gun at a camp. Was blown away. My guess you'll be very happy with it.

Curly ash is a new one on me for a rifle stock. But, I can't think of a reason why you wouldn't want to use it. You mentioned what you did with the open grain. Looks great. Now, we want pics of the finished rifle.

Well I put the third coat of oil on the stock tonight! Turned out a beautiful stock with the aqua-fortis and oil finish, at least to me. I used tung oil to keep that nice color I got from the aqua fortis. The gun came assembled with all of the parts fitting nice and snug in the mortises so that part was done. I did relieve some lock part mortises just a little. I had to draw file the barrel, take the lock apart and smooth all of the surfaces, file and sand the trigger plate and buttstock which took me most of the day yesterday. I blued the barrel and hardware and rubbed it back a bit with steel wool. I did sand the stock down to 600 and put a coat of finish on yesterday. I got two hand rubbed coats on today. I may go another coat but not sure yet. Cant wait to shoot it!! Ill get some pics up hopefully in the sun tomorrow! For a first semi build, I think it turned out perfect. It is not without its flaws but they are small and not minded at all. I had a little lathe work to make a brass adapter for my ramrod to fit 10-32 tips as it is threaded for 8-32.

Nice finish on your Rifle. I really like a Mountain Rifle built in Ash...it just fits very nice, with the added bonus of curl included. Won't be long in the future there will likely be no more ash to build with because of the Emerald ash borer. So you definitely own a beautiful heirloom! Now get out there and bag some game!

Thanks fellas! There is always a feeling of screwing something up when you start a project like this but to be honest it was very relaxing and satisfying. With this being the first one Ive attempted I am tickled pink with my results and can't wait to shoot it. To be honest, the hard part was the reading and researching the direction to go with it, the finishing was like a vacation!
