Wanted to post to announce the acquisition of a very lightly used, new condition Lyman Great Plains in 54 caliber. Forum Member Flint Leather had it up for sale here, and I got it from him. Not only is this a super nice gun, Kevin is an honorable man and a real gentleman to do business with. I'll get a link up with some pics tonight. Hopefully I can squeeze some range time in this long weekend to get the beginnings of a load developed for it.

Let's all take time this weekend to celebrate the ultimate sacrifice that some of our defenders of liberty have made for us. Remember those who gave all to us who needed the wolves to protect us from the evils that surround us, both domestic and abroad.

A special holiday to celebrate, absolutely. As for your "new" GPR do post rifle photos and, of course, targets. :hatsoff: :patriot:

There's people that insist the wood must be slimmed down on a GPR to make it authentic or something.

But after the modifications they still shoot just as good! :idunno:

Congratulations on your new rifle! I sure like my GPR, I need to learn how to post pictures here, because I sure would like to share a picture or two, of that rifle, and others.

Hi,
Great to hear about your good fortune on great purchase.
You can spend more on a BP rifle, but you can't buy better.
Also the .54 cal. is great as well.
Please tell us more as you use it.

Know that it's likely to take a little wear in the bore to bring it up to its potential. You can do it by shooting 200-300 shots or hurry the process with lots of rod pumping with a tab of green Scotch pad over your jag. I'm more inclined to shooting than pumping! :hatsoff:

For me, if it ain't broke - Don't fix it! The stock is very nice and the finish is near perfect (oiled). If anything, it might get anoher coat of oil as it gets field time and wipe downs. Rifle is very comfortable to hold, as long as you keep that pointy buttstock shouldered right. I'll be getting out to shoot it on Monday. I have assorted patches in .010 to .018 and balls in .530 and .535, powder in Swiss, Goex and Old Ensford in 2f and 3f. I am taking the master box to the range and plan on a nice day out shooting. I am going to find out what it really likes!

LOL, yup, I am with you. I don't bore paste when I can spend time on the shooting range. That gives me more time to get to know all the personality traits of the gun. That holds true for all my toys, each has it's own character, and I like feeling that character as it comes forth and develops. It's a lot more satisfying to spend the time at the range than standing at the workbench at home.

Congrats on the new gun! All of my GPRs (and my Plains Pistol) like .018 pillow ticking patches lubed with Trappers Pure Mink Oil and a .530 ball. Most shoot well with Goex FF but a couple of them have a definite preference for FFF. They are all accurate with both light and heavier charges which makes them versatile for hunting both big and small game.

I slimmed the comb quite a bit and did some minor alterations to the stock of the GPR kit I built. I did this so it would resemble a gun pictured in the book The Plains Rifle by Charles E Hansen. I do like the look and feel of it better but I still enjoy shooting my unaltered GPRs also.

I slim the forend on all of mine to shift a little more weight away from the muzzle. Works for me to get the "feel" I want in a gun, while looking better to my eye.

Ordered a Pedersoli Ghost Sight for the new GPR. I will wait until it arrives to get the new rifle out and tuned up. I really likes the looks of this sight, it is compact and unobtrusive. It fits the pre-drilled mounting hole(s) on the GPR tang. I am running the Williams sights on other rifles, and they are great. This sight intrigued me in it's size and sleek design.

That sight is a close version of the old TC Hunter Peep. A very good thing for you, especially since the TC's demand a king's ransom on the rare occasions they come up for sale on the bid sites.

Nice. Who sells those sights? The Lyman aperture sight I installed on my GPR works great but that Pedersoli sight looks a whole lot neater.
TOTW lists them, but they never have them in stock.
I ordered from Taylors, they seem to keep a stock of a lot of Vernier and Ghost sights. http://www.taylorsfirearms.com/acc...accessories/sights/ghost-creedmore-sight.html
These are the sights that Pedersoli puts on their doubles (Kodiak) and many of the singles they sell.
Like you, I have installed the Lyman and Williams on my rifles. The Williams is far superior to the Lyman, and I will see about the Pedersoli ghost. Since it is Pedersoli, I am betting it's going to be great!

Thanks for the link!
I tried to order that sight for my rifle, and TOW shows they are out so I checked the notify me button, and that was a few months back.
I never liked those other bulky sights but I was almost going to bite the bullet and order one.
Now that you posted the link I've got the ghost sight on the way as well.
Thanks again! Jimbo

Which Williams sight did you get and where did you get it at? I have the Lyman and it works ok, but it is kind of flimsy and bulky.

I bought them direct from Williams because I wanted to get the target knobs for one of them. I use that one for varying distances and wanted to be able to dial it up when I will be shooting long. I like the Williams because they have a lock down feature that keeps them from rattling and changing the POI, which I was having issues with on the Lyman 517SML. It was just loose all the time and floppy, not a good thing when trying to shoot precision.
The Williams-FP-HAWKENS will run very nicely on TC, Investarms, Lyman Hawkens and Great Plains or Pedersoli Hawkens and mountain. Since the .58 will be dedicated for hunting, I wanted a trim sight sight that I could fix and forget. Thus the Pedersoli Ghost. Set at 82 yards, I'm good for all the deer hunting I do these days. https://williamsgunsight.com/product-category/muzzleloader-sights/

Guess you got the last one Griz! :idunno:

Got an email this morning from Taylor saying the sights are on backorder and expect them in about a month.
