Just got it from the Cabelas sale. I know it is not necessary or maybe even desirable to remove the barrel for cleaning since it is pinned. If I do decide to remove the barrel, since there are several groups of pins, do all they all come out or just certain ones?

Or, would the TOTW flush kit thingy that clamps onto the barrel be better?

Also, what's the consensus on removing the flash-hole line when cleaning?

Most of my rifles are "pinned".

I use the TOTW flush thingy kit for day to day cleaning - works well enough.

I do pull the barrel(s) once or twice a year to give them a good soak/flush.

The barrel usually only has 3 or maybe 4 pins holding it in - the other pins are for the ramrod pipes/possibly a sling swivel etc.

Have a look at your owners manual - should maybe/probably be a parts list/diagram - will allow you to figure which pins are barrel pins if/when you want to pull the barrel.

If the pin is (within) the range of one of the ramrod pipes, it is NOT holding the barrel - so don't punch those out (not that it will hurt, but not necessary)

I pull the barrel each time I shoot my LR's. I don't want to get water in the barrel channel. It's not that hard, and I probably did it 50-60 times during the build process.

Waxing the lower barrel flats will protect quite well. If u do pull the pins be sure to mark them so they can b reinstalled into the same location and direction.

There are several pins that hold the ramrod thimbles into the stock. There are probably 2 at each thimble. Do NOT remove these.

The remaining pins would have to be removed to remove the barrel.

I don't recommend driving the pins totally out of the stock. Rather, drive the barrel pins out so that about 1/4 inch of them is exposed. Then, use a pair of pliers to pull the pins the rest of the way out.

This will keep you from buggering (and enlarging) the pin holes in the wood.

Ditto, I don't pull them for routine cleaning and the year
of my 1st flinter I out 8-pounds of powdah thru her!

If/when I do remove a barrel, like others, I only back out the pins enough the clear the lug. Now REMEMBER, on all arms, pins and such are drifted IN (muzzle AWAY from you) from right to left and are drifted OUT from L to R.

I also coat the part of the barrel captured by wood with a waterproof grease ....
