New Sights for old eyes

For those of us that are having a hard time seeing here is a tip and a product you might consider. I put a set of these marble sights on my Great Plains rifle to see what they would look like on the gun. I think they look pretty darn good and kinda correct for the gun with a modern twist. Fully adjustable. They are all steel too so they could be stripped and browned. That full buckhorn works pretty good as a peep too. I had to do a good bit of filing to get them to fit the dovetail on my rifle. I think this sight looks ten times better than that hideous adjustable sight that comes with the rifle.

I like that sight. I have a Ruger with a white diamond on the sight at it works very well for me.

Treeman, that sight looks like it provides a sight closer to the eye and longer from the front sight - both more accurate than the original slot. Nice.

Reading the reviews on midway USA some reviewer stated the dovetail and buckhorn were plastic. I didn’t see that before I ordered so I was expecting plastic. I would have used them anyways maybe but I was expecting disappointment. I can assure you that this entire site is steel. I used the old tapping it on my teeth trick to check lol. Filing it definitely proved it was steel and not aluminum or plastic with my dull files.

I loved mine when I was shooting cowboy action. at close range steel targets you didn't even need the front sight. if you could see it in the buckhorn, you would hit it.

I have a Lyman globe sight up front on this rifle. I’m gonna experiment a little with different inserts and try that full buckhorn as a peep too. The tips of the buckhorn are so close it almost makes a ghost/full ring.

I widened the V on my rear sights as my vision changed , I tried an aperture sight but prefer the wide V , it works for me

Personal preference, but I have found myself usually removing the horn from my buckhorn sights, though a lot of shooters love them. Another similar Marbles sight (ghost ring instead of buckhorn) that I have tried and liked is their Bullseye Sights. Mounted in the ‘normal’ rear sight location it works very well for new shooters (and those with more senior eyes). Once they can see the front sight through the rear ghost ring all they have to do is put the front sight on the target. These sights come in two lengths that have elevation adjustment, and one that is fixed. If they weren’t all bright and shiny they wouldn’t be very noticeable on a ‘traditional’ gun, but they could also be refinished.

The photographs are of the longer version. Wanted to bring the ghost ring back as close as possible to my eye.

I like those but the club I shoot at won’t allow ghost ring or peep sights. They will allow a front globe. That’s why I went with these buckhorns. I do very well with ghost rings on my unmentionables.

If you are trying to find the correct position for the rear sight for your eyes , get some double sided tape and try sticking the sight on the barrel in different places before you cut anything . and aim at something at least 100 yards away , not the other side of your workshop .

You are right, that is the way to do it.

Some old guns have 3 or 4 places where the rear sight was.

Great in theory, but my problem is that rear sight needs to somewhere out in front of the muzzle to be clear. Then there’s the front sight……

Nothing a yard stick and duct tape cannot fix.

Kept moving rear sight forward. finally had to go to tang mtd. peep. All clear then. PITAzz , but amazingly all cleared w/ peep. Can shoot w/ 100 yd. accuracy again.

I DO like this new addition to your Lyman! It does not look out of place at all and looks like it will be a great aid to aiming that nice rifle you have! I am now very partial to peep sights and have a set on my 45-70 guide gun. For now I am doing fine with sights like yours on my Browning though. Be well.

You need to convince them to change the rules to allow access for people with disabilities. Yes, not being able to see the sights is a disability.

At my club, we made different targets for people who have some sort of disability. It allows them to shoot but the rings are tighter to offset the accomodation. It may be allowing one to use a low powered scope, or to shoot from a bench instead of position shooting. We have people in their eighties still shooting because we have made these accommodations and it hasn't bothered one member that I know of.

Stand up for the people who have disabilities and you stand higher in the eyes of your fellow man.

A vast improvement. I'm going a step further I think and put the Lyman 57 peep on my GPR flinter. Some research revealed peeps were actually used in the days of Hawkins rifles if s customer ordered it that way...
