Shot it for the first time this weekend.
Instead of going with .177 w patch I went with .22 pellet in this style. The steel BB aids in penetration. Not sure of weight.

I shot everything at 25yrds. I used 10g 4f. I did not shoot for accuracy today but I had no issue hitting the 2x4 at 25, first shot.

Easily but snugly thumb seats. No patch needed. The skirt catches the minimal fouling from the last shot, scraping its way down and providing a flame buffer.

Distance through the pressure treated 2x4. Almost through!

Even damage to my steel knockdown. I won't shoot that again. Plenty of energy for a little pellet

Well that's a horse of a different color. Very cool man. How far out do you think that'll shoot?

Builder is JR Salvo, he has since passed. From what I have read, he was a specialist in small bore guns. He made everything on the rifle, lock, stock and barrel. Barrel is 5/8" x45" pull is 13 7/8. I don't know how far it will shoot accurately yet, I was just testing g for energy and function. It is quite a puece. 10g of 4f is not loud at all maybe as loud as cci quiet loads out of a rifle. No plugs needed, just eye protection

Many of the old timers will remember JR Salvo. He was well known on the once famous NMLRA rendezvous circuit and at Friendship on the primitive side. He was a blacksmith, bow maker, BP gun maker and primitive trader. He usually ran the archery contests at the old NMLRA rondyvoos, mostly EPR, SEPR and later the ONWTPR. A lot of people knew him but few got along with him or called him a friend. He was a little bit ornery to say the least, but one heck of an artist. He made & sold knives, hawks, pipe hawks, bows, cane arrows and guns, mostly the southern type. He was originally from Ridgeville, So. Carolina but moved to south Ohio around 1992 or 93. He died of pneumonia Jan. 2010 but was stricken with that mesothelioma manure connected with years of working in the shipyards in Charleston. I now occupy his old gun/bow shop and have been selling off his things, (guns & such) for the past 5 years for his widow. This .20 cal smooth rifle was the last one of his items to sell. I am keeping his personal gun, "Malachi", and a couple pipe hawks he made for sentimental reasons and also because they are just awesome.

Actually I had a pretty good first impression with him. We were young, probably 20ish, and set up one heck of a woods walk. I mean, we put ALOT of thought into the stations and it was a big hit. Well the old timers, and in particular Salvo, were so impressed, that he gave 4 or 5 of us some camp axes that he made.

Still have mine and that was roughly 10 years ago.

A really nice flintlock pellet rifle! And some background on the maker. Nothing shabby there.

I look forward to your next trip to the range, to find out more as to the accuracy at further distances (not expecting a 100 yarder :). There is a lot of fun in that rifle.

And Keb, your response is a good example of why this Forum is such an awesome place.

Salvo really liked young people and he did a lot to encourage them in their pursuit to become more "primitive". He saw them as the rondyvoo's future. It wasn't only the kids though. I saw him award the last place finisher in an adult bow shoot the 1st place prize once. He figured the best shot didn't need another bow but the last place finisher did. What a guy, IMHO. I've seen him not sell an item to someone who was not a buck skinner just because he didn't want his stuff tucked away somewhere or hanging on a wall. He wanted his things to be used. He always wanted to apprentice someone to carry on his craft but that never happened. That's too bad. I'd have loved to do that.

I'm sure he'd be smiling right about now if he could see his "Ultimate Squirrel Gun" making smoke again.

Thx Keb for chiming in!!

Took it out today to lay waste to some cans, bottles and random obtrusive leaves.

No real leading to speak of, a streak here and there that cleaned up easily at end. I may try a wad at some point. I will let accuracy determine how I load in the end.

Whole Woods kit required to shoot
