I just started casting my own rb's and the fit I had with the Hornady round balls was fine. The new balls cast a little bigger and it was a hard start to get the ball going. I went to the local Jo Anns and they had some Chinese pillow ticking that measured .015" it looked cheap but maybe thats just because it said made in china on it. My old patching measured .020". Well I went out today and loaded up with nothing changed but the patching and first 3 shots went into one hole at 38 yards!!!! I was concerned that fouling would be worse, with the old patching it was nonexistant. It still is!!!I'm a happy camper now and all the money I spent for mold, handles, pot and ladle is paid for with the first 600 balls I moulded. From now on they will only be a penny or so apiece.Good things really do happen. FRJ

A little bigger than what? Purchased balls or some made with hard alloys?
Enneyhow, there are two different tickings. Pillow and bed. Pillow is thinner. Always look for pure cotton and country of manufacture. And always take a micrometer to the store with you. You will get funnly looks from the ladies while measuring the thickness. Just give them funny looks back. When you find some that is just right buy a large quantity so you will have it for a long time.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I thought I said I was originally shooting Hornady rb. I also thought I said that I took a caliper and that I measured the fabric and what country it was from. I guess we just don't understand each other. FRJ

No problem. I responded in a morning 'pre fully caffinated' condition.

So you know if you need chop siticks to load them, Like you, as long as it is pure cotton, can't see where it is made having any effect.

I sell my lubed patches and have used material sourced from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Egypt, China and Mexico. The only problem I have had was with material from Mexico that was advertised as 100% cotton. It obviously had synthetic fibers in it and would not absorb lube. I have now fallen for the 100% cotton tag on the Mexican material twice now.

I now closely inspect and do the "flame test" before I buy any Mexican "100% cotton".

Well now that you explain it that way, makes sense. Figures there would be some fast buck artist lying in their labeling.

When you say flame test I presume you mean holding a flame under a piece of the cloth and seeing if the synthetic material shrivels up?

Did you wash the sizing out of your 100 percent cotton material?

The sizing is a starch that the cloth is soaked with to make it easy to handle while cutting or sewing it.
It can easily "fill" the fibers so they won't absorb patch lubes and I suspect this is the problem your having.

Because the sizing is water soluble it is easily washed out of the material with soap and water.

mattress ticking - must be what I got recently - .027 thickness - not sure what I will do with it - save for later or get more n make a haversack. last stuff I bought is not striped - looks like the precut patch material. it is .016 and will test it tomorrow weather permitting

Yes Zonie,

I wash all of my material before cutting it. I learned the hard way not to put it in the dryer. It likes to roll into a tube.

Yes cotton will just char.
Depending on the ratio of synthetic to cotton in a blend, under a flame the material will curl or even drip burning plastic. Not a test to do indoors. :shake:
