Retired guy living in the Ozarks. New to black powder. Just scored an older Thompson Center 54 cal Hawken, a Pietta 12 ga SBS Shotgun, and a Ruger Old Army revolver.

Shot them all the first time last week using Goex FFFg. Cleanup took an hour per gun. I also own some Hodgen Pyrodex and Triple 7. I have used the Triple 7 in the Hawken, but looking for advise.

Welcome // But something is wrong if it takes one hour to clean the rifle and shotgun .I can see that maybe on the pistol. What method did you use to clean. Good old soap and water will get it clean in about 10 minutes or less. Hope this helps.

A lot of that time was finding brushes and jags that fit, and a wrench to remove the nipples. I had to buy a thin wall 3/16 socket to remove the nipples on the Ruger.

I also had a hang fire on the Hawken, so I made a pick to clean out the nipple, and cleared the charge.
