Wonder what the melting point is on that stuff and can it be cast into round balls?
You can do it with bismuth/tin alloy but not with Ecotungsten/NiceShot. That is a suspension of tungsten powder in tin matrix, with a tin coating on the pellets, and separates if you melt it. The inventor said on his blog that he was considering making round balls, but I haven't heard anything further. For casting round balls, it is probably cheaper to get bulk bismuth/tin alloy from suppliers like Rotometals. I believe Rotometals is now offering a 7% tin alloy specifically for that. Bird shot is normally made with 3% tin, although some individuals use a 5% alloy, and larger balls, especially for rifles apparently need higher alloying for toughness.

Woosdeguy, NiceShot is just spherical shot - no belts, rounded cubes, or anything else odd.

Joel

Nice shot is round...Its Itx shot that reminds me of black cloud pellets.
Basically unfinished shot pellets..Looks like the planet Saturn.
or belted.

I just looked at the website that Roundball included in his posting. All I can say that if I had to use shot costing $205 plus postage for a 6 pound bag, I'd start hunting in places that allow lead shot or I'd be using steel shot for waterfowl.

Its a commitment!!!

Bill.Shooting Nontoxic is not for the faint of heart.

There will be many more areas where non-toxic is your only option.

Here's my take..please follow...

When I shot cf non-toxic..it was a 3 shot volley.Bang,bang,bang. or .75 cents,.75 cents,75 cents= 2.25 dollars

with black powder it's Ka-Boom once=2.25

Its a wash in the long run.........Do you follow me???

Game in bag has shrunk due to one shot but the fun factor tripled.

and there's just enough ducks to prepare for the feasts...

Warning!!!!!!! Opinion Ahead!!!!! "We owe it to the game to use the most efficient shot when using black powder"
We intentionally handicap ourselves.
I despise chasing cripples!!!!!!

#2 hevi-shot #2 Nice-shot kill them dead-deader No BS!!!!!!!!
I have many witnesses.

Nice shot works well with black powder...
Prefer to use a wad in the bore with Nice shot.
Not to protect the bore but to keep the shot from wiping and deforming out the tube= better pattern.
You will not be disappointed if you commit to using it.

Ballistic Products has ITX shot that is soft enough for gun barrels and is about the same density as lead. They sell 7lbs for about $150, and trial size packages of 1lb for about $27.
Still kinda pricey, but I have had such poor results with steel using modern shotgun I can just imagine it at the relatively low velocities out of a traditional muzzleloader. Nothing more disappointing than having a nice green head spew feathers like a busted down pillow, hit the ground, then just get up and keep going. Seen it more than once with steel.

Agree on the steel for sure...and unless somebody is really, really well off financially, its a rare individual who can afford to 'do it all'. It would be a huge financial undertaking for me to decide to get into something like black powder duck hunting, particularly at this stage of my life...and I couldn't afford both pursuits so I made the choice and am lucky / content to be able to get the occasional deer, dove, squirrel, turkey with the Flintlocks that I have.

I did buy some Niceshot a couple years ago as one of the landowners who's land I hunt has a big pond on it that regularly has geese come in to it...have the idea I might set up on that pond with my 20ga one day and try a head/neck shot on one coming in for a landing, or just shoot one like a turkey if it waded out of the water, LOL
