Nipple Advice

Hi everyone!

I wanted to replace the #11 nipple on my New Englander. I contacted Track of the Wolf to make sure I ordered the correct one. How ever, when I went to swap it today, I noticed the nipple is a considerable amount longer than the one that was on the gun when I bought it. It threads in fine, but that extra length does cut down on how far the hammer is traveling (just a little past half cock). Does anyone know if this is okay?

It should be fine. One way to tell is to make sure the gun is not loaded and snap a few caps.

You should be able to pop caps using that nipple. The major issue is that the cone may be so long that it will be difficult to seat a percussion cap with the lock at half cock.

Depending on how tight the caps fit on the nipple, the "cone" is tapered. You can file it down decreasing it's length and increasing the cap fit.
Don't over do it though, or you'll be buying another nipple.

The shorter of the two nipples looks like it could have been a pistol nipple. That's really short.
It could have been peened down by dry firing or filed filed off to get rid of mushrooming.
The longer nipple should give you good function.

Does the hammer sit square on the nipple. Too short or too long you may not get an effective seal. Gas blow back can affect accuracy and may also result in debris and risk of eye damage.

Track of the Wolf’s online catalog lists a shorter 1/4x28 for TC rifles plus the longer one you have for general use. I also think your longer one should be fine.

TC seemed to start using the short nipples at some point. I use both sizes interchangeably without issue. The short nipple may have been designed in a lawyer's office.
