what are the nipple thread size for the lyman great plains rifle 50 cal, the Thompson 50 cal and the pedersoli rocky mountain hawker. thanks for your help in this matter

GPR per the Owners Manual (O/M), pg 22 item# 10 nipple part #6030124, size is 6x.75 Lyman, all their rifles and pistol have the same size listed in the O/M. I don't know about Thompson.

Agree with all the above ,the only Pedersoli I own is a Howdah and it uses a metric 6x.75,same as my Investarms 58 Hawken, seems to be common for most Italian guns

for my birthday I received a lyman GPH, Thompson, and a Pendersoli RMHM all in 50 cal. any thoughts on installing primer nipple converson kits and on sights at 70 I need all the help I can get. thanks for any thoughts on the matter, I will only be target shooting

Congrats on the new rifles. I'm not sure what advantage there is to using #209 primers for a traditional muzzleloader. If you are using real black powder or subs like Pyrodex, standard caps should work fine. From what I understand, #209 primers are needed to reliably set off the newer powders/pellets used in modern muzzleloaders.

If you need or want to replace the factory nipples, I have had good luck with Track of the Wolf's in-house brand. I have one in my Lyman GPR and six in my Uberti Colt. CCI #11caps fit the best, followed by Remington #11, then Remington #10.

I can't help with sights but am interested in any replies you get. I'm currently using the stock sights. The vernier tang sights sold on different websites look nice.

Thanks for the reply, I'm thinking of changing the nipples due to hang and miss fires. Don't know if it will help but I am willing to try it.

The standard caps and nipples should give you reliable ignition - did you clean the rifles before trying to shoot them? Often new rifles like the GPR, are shipped from the factory with a preservative grease in the bore. This grease should be removed before firing.

Make sure the fire channel is clear and clean, the rifle should fire reliably then with standard caps.

Lyman makes a nice rear aperture sight, I think its the 57SME, that might help. It mounts to the tang of the GPR and will place the rear sight much closer to your eye. This Lyman sight could be mounted on your other rifles also with some modifications. TC made or marketed a rear tang mounted aperture sight also, you may be able to find one on ebay or GB.

The nipple, is just this simple. It has a tiny hole thru it, and if it's open the fire from the cap should go through. If the cap doesn't completely seat all the way down on the nipple, it can fail to go off. You can clean the nipple with a pipe cleaner and a tiny wire. You can chuck the nipple, in a drill and use emory cloth or sandpaper to clean it up and remove burrs. There are #10 caps and #11, you'll be lucky if they fit all three guns. The inside of the hammer cup, must be clean and free of old cap pieces and rust. You can also run a pipe cleaner(sold in gun supply stores) down into the fire chamber. If a gun is clean, and the nipple and fire channel are open, and the cap is fully seated, then, there is no reason for it not to fire. Cap sizes vary from one manufacturer to the next. Even if you buy new nipples and use the wrong caps or one's that don't fit properly, you'll still have the same problem. There is no way all three rifles need new nipples, unless someone dry fired all three rifles, without caps. And even so, the burrs can be removed.

Peep sights can help, but good quality progressive lenses, should allow you to see. I'm almost 66 and with the help of Essilor "Definity" lenses, I now shoot better than when I was younger. I do not hesitate to experiment with changing sights, until I get a good sight picture, that suits me.

When I first bought my .50 TC Hawken I ordered one of the 209 mag spark adaptors. I have never put it on the rifle. I tried shooting with the standard #11 caps and it works just fine that way. I expect the 209 has too much umph for the application.

If you want to stick to iron sights the aperture sights do offer some advantages. Lyman still offers one for the GPR, I think. I am a bit older than you and have poor contrast vision. For load development and for hunting where I want to be sure of aim I have a red dot sight and a Leopold base that mounts in the sight screw holes on the Thompson that does a superb job. It is also cheaper than a TC aperture sight from ebay. I bought an extra barrel from ebay to display on the gun and for practice shooting with iron sights and the no-no sight rig all zeroed in stays in the closet for when I want to use it.

The Pedersoli Rocky Mountain is almost certainly 1/4 28 (most, but not all, Pedersolis are). That's counter-intuitive because one would rationally expect Italian guns to be metric.

This is significant because 6mm .75 will start to thread in a 1/4 28 female fitting, and then cross thread.

This brings a few questions to mind- is this problem happening consistently with all of your rifles?- If so, it's probably a bigger problem than the nipples.

Next question, what kind of powder are you using?

Also, how are you cleaning/oiling the guns? You may have some leftover oil/gunk in the barrel and the flash channel that's causing the problem.

I have, on occasion, had misfires with my caplock. It's always been a case of operator error. Usually either the nipple or the flash channel has some oil or debris in it.
