Nipples

Being new to black powder, I find nipples to be the most confusing. I am looking for stainless steel nipples for my Uberti reproduction revolvers, a Traditions single shot .50-caliber pistol, a Trdaitions 'Hawken" rifle, and a Lyman Plains Muzzle Loading Pistol. Has there ever been a composite listing of what nipples fit what firearm? It seems that even the manufacturers sites are confusing.

Any help would be appreciated.

The Traditions will use a 6x1mm thread
And the Lyman will use a 6x.75mm thread

other than Slixshot from Badman Bullets contact Track of the Wolf for help. They fixed me up with excellent quality nipples. But be sure to get a wrench that fits. Their number PIR-LS has shoulders a bit wider than the originals and fortunately I hada wrench that fit.

Slixshot nipples are great and do solve a lot of cap jam problems. The trouble is is they are engineered to fit Remington #10 caps. Trust me on this CC! #11 caps work most of the time CCI #10 and RWS 1075 DO NOT WORK on Slixshots at all and I have tried a lot.

More confusing are the Track of the Wolf stainless nipples I put on my Uberti Walkers that TotW says fit CCI #11 caps. But they sit slightly high and often don't pop on the first hammer hit.

I'm going to try to "burnish " them to take just a hair off the diameter

Burnish with great care. very great care. The difference between work and junk is minuscule trust me on this.

I fired around 150 shots through my uberti yesterday with Slixshot nipples. I used my rws 1075+ . i have never had a issue with RWS in fact i prefer them to remington. But YMMV....

Thanks all for your help. This information gave me a good starting point. I love my single-shot 'cappers' and slowly graduating into revolvers. I am looking forward, but with some hesitancy, to my first long gun excursion. For some reason, I don't feel confident enough to get there yet.

You have basically 3 thjngs to consider on nipples:
• cap size
• thread size
• flash hole diameter at the bottom end. A smaller hole is almost always better.

Height of the nipple cone above the nipple seat.
For some revolvers, the hammer is designed to hit the frame right after the hammer strikes the cap and before it hits the top of the cone. I have one Remington copy that would only fire CCI magnum caps. Unfortunately the nipples were sized for #10 caps. I could fire the CCI Magnum caps but they would fragment and fall into the action and jam it up. I was able to find nipples with a taller cone, but now I can't dry fire.

Burnish with great care. very great care. The difference between work and junk is minuscule trust me on this.

I'd probably just take each one and lightly burnish it then test fit a #11 cap until the fit was right

That's the first thing i thought of when i read your post. He must have a light spring.

I opened one up and tried to replace ith a OEM spring, but it has a hammer stop and it is a tiny bit too thick. Possibly thinning the tip may make the difference we shall see.
I will go for reliability with plentiful caps ( i have a lot) over a little lighter hammer pull.

I would only dry fire if the hammer can not strike the nipple. The foam in the hammer slot is a good idea. I didn't find out that my Remington Target revolver by EuroArms was designed to allow dry firing until I put 6 CCI #11 caps on the nipples and none of them fired. I did get the revolver to fire with CCI #11 Magnum caps. I found nipples with longer cones at Track of the Wolf and properly sized for #11 caps, so no more dry firing for me.
