Folks:

The North-south Skirmish Association, where individuals and teams clad in the uniforms of their forebears compete with Civil War firearms against each other and the clock, is holding its 112th Nationals Oct. 5 - 9 at its home range, Fort Shenandoah, near Winchester Va. We'll be shooting revolver, carbine, musket, smoothbore, repeater, mortar and field artillery matches -- all live fire.

Non-members are welcome to come, watch the competitions, palaver with skirmishers and patronize the dozens of sutlers who will be there selling guns, leathers, moulds and the 10,001 other things that every blackpowder shooter needs. In fact, the only thing visitors can't do is compete. Shooting is limited to team members -- some 3,600 of us.

But if you've heard about this unique shooting sport and want to see it at its best, c'mon down to Winchester. And if you haven't heard about it, you are sadly underinformed. All details available at this link:

http://www.n-ssa.org/NATIONAL/112th/112th.html

And all details about the organization itself are at

http://www.n-ssa.org

Hope you come and catch the bug. Load momma (or daddy) and the kids in the car (please leave fido at home) and enjoy a place where black powder is king and the air is always full of its sweet-smelling, acrid perfume. If you like what you see, there are always plenty of teams welcoming new members. And keep an eye out for the guy who looks disgustingly like the picture with this post. I'll be glad to meet you.

that guy in the picture is scary looking! wish i could make the trip to check it out. can't afford the trip right now. if you can post any pictures that would be great. let us know how your team does in the shoots. :thanks:

WK:

We had a typical Nationals: two days of warm, dry weather, two days of steady rain, last day cloudy and cool, but dry - ideal for the Wearin' o' the Wool.

Our second-string carbine team won first place in its division (B-2, the Best o' the Rest) Otherwise, we were about middle of the respective packs in smoothbore, carbine and musket.

Don't have any fresh pics, but shots from other Nationals are on our main Web site, http://www.n-ssa.org Imagine a firing line more than a quarter-mile long, 64 teams of 8 members each - more than 500 competitors standing shoulder-to-shoulder, touching off their muskets at the sound of the buzzer. Clouds of white smoke hanging in the damp, still air. Nothing like it in the world! Hope you come out and see us down in Centerburg, O., next summer. Let the bug bite you - it'll feel good!

Pappa Bear

What unit are you with? I spend 16 years in the NSSA, all of it with the 3rd Md Artillery, CSA. Had to quit spending all my money on gun stuff to raise 2 kids.
Nothing like all those guns firing at once.

Gen. Mosby:

I'm with Gen. W.T. Sherman's Bodyguard, MW 138. Just finishing my 10th year in the association and my third as Midwest regional commander. Only wish I had discovered it a long, long time before I did.

Hope you come on by again. I tell you -- well, I don't HAVE to tell YOU -- there's nothing like that first volly on Sunday morning... :blue: :grey:
