Has anyone ever seen one with a rear sight? I have interest in getting one, however, in NJ you cannot hunt deer without having a rear sight while using a round ball.

I put a lancaster style on my tulle. I first saw a rear sight on a bess over 30 years ago.I know two sights can be bought and one can be filed off flat and browned then you can hunt with the rear sight and change it to a dove tail filler to be used in if your at a no rear site shoot since its well known that in the old days if a person was found with a rear sight on his smoothy he was floged to death with a fiber glass ramrod(few people were punished this way due to the shortage of fiberglass) :haha:

I have a reactor buddy that does that very thing...he has a
16 ga Early English Trade gun, that is his deer and turkey gun, when the rear sight is on, he taps out the rear site and puts a blank in and reenacts with it....can hardly tell

Although they didn't come that way from the factory, there are any number of originals that have had rear sights added to the barrel. It was a fairly common addition.

I am putting one on my type D Frenchy as soon as the weather warms and I can use my unheated shop.

The Museum of the Fur Trade displays a significant percentage of the smoothbores with rear sights. Most were likely added later.

I counted them and came up with 13% had rear sights. All the ones on NORTHWEST GUNS were added after the fact. Many had a simple flake lifted with a chisel and a notch filed in.
