is there such a thing as a 1/2 stock musket, musketoon etc? I just went through DGW page and found nothing. Not 1/2 stock that is.

Muskets and Musketoons were smooth bore military guns and believe it or not, just like modern military guns they got hot during battle conditions.
The full stock helped to protect the shooters hands from the heat.

I don't know of a smoothbore musket that had a half stock.

That said, the Model 1803 Rifle was a half stock flintlock that was used from 1804 to well past the war of 1812.

And as time went by guns did get altered after the fact. Gunstocks got broke and hacked off, barrles got shortened. Most of the time aumterish and not very pretty.

There are lots of original civil war muskets that have had the stocks cut and barrels bored smooth. But they wouldnt have been issued that way. I believe Bannerman did alot of these with old surplus parts.

I have the 1803. But was hoping to find something similar but in smooth bore. Looks like a shotgun either single barrel or SxS is my best bet with that combo in mind.

There were lots of half-stock fowlers. The fowlers can shoot the same size ball as a musket. The fowlers weigh less than a musket so the felt recoil is more. Is that what you were looking for?

Get a used .58 barrel for your M.1803 and have it freshed out to a .60 smoothbore!

Not sure if TOTW does barrel reaming or not. Give'm a call...if they don't, they can probably recommend someone. folks here can probably give you some help too.

Compared to Mortimers etc, that is a rather handsom pc for an equally handsom price.
In 2000, I had decided all the aspects I was after in a weapon; a rifle (at the time)in .54 and at 1 in 60+ ROT, half stocked, flinter etc.
In 2000 I found 2 the fit all these atributes, the 1803 HF and The Mortimer. Now, the 1803 is $1050 and the Mortimer is $1500. That we dandy at MTG is right up my alley.
I shlda known too, as they also have some other oddball weapons that everyone else told me simply don't exist.

Thanks again,

Do a search on "Middlesex Trading Company, Reviews" before you place an order. India is still on the upswing for quality.

If you go in figuring it is an assembled kit "in the white" and needing finish work and tuning you will likely be OK. But read the reviews first.
