Now they are finding me, so.... Here is my Cabela's .50cal Hawken...

In honor of my fathers passing this past Monday, I have purchased this Cabela's .50cal Hawken.
My father was a hunter, but only with modern weapons, but absolutely loved all of my bp items.
He would relish in every one I emailed him pictures of, and loved each one.
Heheh, he is the one that taught me how to "shop cheap, but smart"....., dad, this one is for you!

I had no intention of purchasing another "lower level" bp rifle, but this one I could not pass up as it was from someone local to him that is getting on in years also, and has decided to simplify his life.

It is 20 years old, well maintained and came with a bunch of "other" stuff as seen in the pictures..
I guess I am becoming "the guy" that will purchase lower level stuff that has been well maintained, and you know what, I cannot complain in the least.

I have 12 of them now, and I think I just may keep going with this hodge podge lower level collection thing as they come up.

Everything needs someone to love it, and so far, I have not found one that I do not truly love.

Even came with the original Cabela's box!

Let's just say, it was between $274.00, and $276.00 for everything in the pictures.
I will not sell this one ever!

Yes, I got lucky, and do not feel I took advantage of the seller.
We already knew eachother, and he wanted out, and I just cannot pass up a terrific deal for a decent rifle....... (probably why I have 10 of them now ).

a shooter let me rebuild one of those or one like it years ago. it was a 45 cal roundball gun with a 1/60 twist. the difference is from any other is it had 12 lands and grooves, shallow grooves. like to buy one like that for my self. that gun would cut center at 100 yards every time no matter what powder or patching material you used. it was a fantastic shooter

I see the flask. It appears to have a measure for the powder and is intended to load from the flask. Use a separate volume measure to load the rifle.

I have a very special request for everyone here.....
All of you have become like "family" to me in a very short time, and I have an idea to honor my father.....
The next time you take your bp what ever out to shoot, on your first shot, just take a moment and say, "this one is for Jon"..... I have requested this on the FB page I belong to, and think my father would get a kick out of it....... Not sad, not mourning, just celebrating the man that threatened to "take me out because he brought me in"..... Heheh, we were friends that did not see eye to eye on oh so many things, but would stand up for each other till the death!
He was not a war hero, a pioneer, nor anything historic, but he was a good father and husband that loved life and living it.
This "Hawken" may not be the best representation of a true Hawken, but it is a feel good thing for me that only my son shall inherit, and his son after..... We are truly the only son, of an only son, of an only son, of an only son..... but we are all family.

My "frugal" nature seems to be always geared to helping others out when they give up and move on.
No complaints, and I am still considering a higher quality purchase made by a true builder...... of which I discovered I am not..... Heheh....

I do have a couple of powder measures already for my .44's and on up, plus an adjustable one for danged near any shot I want from 0 to ????.
Always good to have input though!

Any place I can find out anything about the serial number to see exactly when it was manufactured.
I have a number, with xxx after it.
From what I have read, that would put it at 1974?

My Sincerest Condolences to you for the loss of your Dad. You made a excellent purchase on that rifle and kit. Here in Canada the identical deal happened last week-end at my club but cost $450.00 instead. The only difference is it was a 50Cal instead. WE thought that was a fair price as well.

I have an Investarms .50 Hawken that looks just like yours. You could maybe email Investarms with your serial number and see what they can tell ya. Nice quality guns that are comparable to a TC....... Greg

Thanks Critter Getter, I have traced it back to being proofed in 1996 (BH) and it was built by Investarms judging by the I on it.

Thanks also Melnic, my father was 85 but had been not the same since he had a quadruple bypass back in 2004.
He was mentally fine, but just could not do much physical stuff anymore.
He kept a positive attitude right up to the end.

Prayers appreciated necchi, and yes, he would have liked having everyone dedicate just one shot to him in his memory.

This spring, when I finally get around to shooting all of mine, each first shot from them will have his name on it, with a smile on my face in memory of him.
Quite the religious man himself, he thought this through for many years......

He wants no tombstone, no dates, just his and my mothers name, (she is still alive and loves this idea), on a concrete bench they purchased years ago so that others visiting the cemetery would have a place to rest and reflect when they are visiting their own families........
This is the way my father and mother thought, and so do I.

I bought the same model rifle as yours from a member here in the For Sale Forum. It's about 30 years old and still performs as new. Accuracy will exceed your expectations if you take sufficient time to work up an accurate powder load.

See, this was not just a random go out and buy it type of purchase.
My father knew about this one as we had talked about it back when it was not available for sale last fall, so it is very appropriate for me to buy it in his memory.

It is from a local gentleman near my parents, that at the time did not want to sell......

The seller called me less than 5 minutes prior to me finding out my father had passed.
It took me a couple of days to put 2 and 2 together, and I just had to have it then......
I think Dad just may have given him a nudge. Heheh!
