I’m sorry! I couldn’t help myself, really! After the post last December about the fish horn, I started thinking that that would be a fun project to attempt. Well, I must have been thinking out loud, since Brett obviously heard me. On New Year’s day a few of us were at Brett’s making smoke in his pasture, when he asked me to make him a fish horn. In trade he would make me a bag. Well, how could I refuse that? Brett showed you all the bag he made for his part of the trade. Here is the rest, my part of the trade.

I found a perfect oval horn at a local shoe repair shop in Salem, that also sells leather and accessories. The shape of this horn just screamed "Fish"!. The wood for the butt plug/fish head I got in the scrap bin at Woodcrafters. I honestly do not know what type wood it is; they carry a lot of exotic woods. It does have a great tiger figure to it. The fish head was all hand carved and fitted to the horn. And yes, it is hollowed out. The fins at the juncture of the horn body to the neck were carved. The spout plug/tail fin is turned walnut with a carved fin fitted to it. The spout is secured to a double carved ring on the neck with braided rawhide. An old drawer pull was screwed onto the top of the head for the horn strap. I scrimshawed Brett's name and date on the outside face of the horn. On the inside face is a latin saying "Vereor Non Piscis", Fear Not Fish. Some scroll work and fins finish up the scrimshaw.
I finished the horn last night and Brett and I made the trade this morning at the Cabin Fever Rendevous. Here's a picture of the two satisfied traders (and yes, that glare in the background is snow).

The bag is great!. I used it today on the trail walk. Brett did a great job on it. It is like a mini saddle bag, with two main pockets and a third smaller pocket. I love it!.

Sounds fishy to me.
:rotf:

That's a mighty fine horn! :hatsoff: Looks like you both came out good on that trade.

....But I got a dilema!
got home from the rondy, wife asked how it went, how I shot.Told her it was wet, darn near 4 inches of white and the targets challenging, followed that up with how I fared in the shoot and she asked me what I won. told only 2 of us played the trade blanket, so we kept our respective items. She says "so you got nothing to show for the win huh?" says I,"remember that bag and strap I made for Scott?"......
pulled out "Oscar"(horn has a name) and she soiled herself!
So, Scott, here is the dilema...
she is exstatic with it and wants it on display on the big shelf on the china cabinet.
See my dilema?(she's gunna let me wear it on good days!)
It is by far, the best piece of artwork in our home. I am grateful!

Man!There are some real fine craftsmen aboard this ship! Real nice horn!
I can't get over some of the unique horn I've seen on here lately. :v Awsome!

Scott, what a lovely horn!! Your carving is outstanding. I like the stopper, really nice de :shocked2: TAIL. This is a real Quality horn!!

  .........You are both TOP NOTCH craftsmen; and what's even better it appears that you're great friends..................it don't get no better than that!

Just so you're real good and get to wear it every third Saturday and the occasional rondy...
I am truly glad that you and your wife like the horn, and it should be displayed. I like to hang my horns on the rack with my guns. Let me know what you come up with for a strap for 'Oscar'.

Thank you all for the comments. It was a fun horn to make, and challenging. I was extremely pleased on how it came out. I wanted it to have a late 18th/early 19th century feel, yet still be a fish. I think I achieved that...
