I'm obsessed with Trade Muskets and recently acquired a used NorthStar West "Early English Trade Gun" from a most excellent gentleman who happens to be a member here as well. He will hopefully see this post and recognize the picture :hatsoff:. I shoot NMLRA competition as well as hunt, so I wanted a good smoothbore for both applications.

Well, I don't work for NSW, nor am I even one of the top marksmen in my club, but look what it did last weekend. This is the 25yd portion of the smootbore aggregate.

When I tell friends that smoothbore flinters with no rear sight can be super-accurate offhand, they tell me I'm nuts. I'm nuts alright - about shooting this trade gun. She's also the prettiest dang flinter in my collection.

a friend of mine has a few of those NSW guns for sale he needs to reduce his inventory...he does some amazing shooting with his too..he always says "smoothbores cant shoot!!!".then proceeds to cut out sections of target the size of a golfball...

Very nice gun and good shooting,ya got a keeper there.

Good Shooting!
What is your load? I need to work up a roundball load for mine.

Good looking gun and great target.

Nice looking walkers in your avatar, I have had some good ones but have curs now. Where abouts in NC are you? I grew up in the mountains and now live in Fayetteville. Chris

Good shooting. I'm so glad you are happy with the gun. I replaced it with a Centermark Tulle that shoots as good as the NSW I sold you. I actually won the tradegun match at a NRLHF event this summer with the Tulle. Now I have some Booshway Bucks to spend at the Eastern next month. :)

Thanks for the kind words, friends. When it comes to shooting, I'm like the proverbial blind pig who occasionally finds an acorn. PMs sent to those who had qustions.
J, I'm happy you saw this post. Congrats on the win at NRLHF - well done :hatsoff: . If that's the modified Centermark you had for sale at the same time as the NSW, I agonized over that one too. If I were a rich man I woulda bought both. How did the extreme long-distance shoots you mentioned turn out? I've started shooting the International Smoothbore aggs too which are a ton of fun. I found out quick that since you cannot swab for the 13 shot/30 minute relay, your lube has to be right.

Now to pattern her with shot so I'll be ready for anything come Fall.

PS: If anyone is thinking about coming to the NC State Championship Muzzleloading Shoot Sept 24-26, do it. It's a great time. I've posted the info on the Events board and can try to answer any questions about the event.

Yes, it is the CM gun I had offered for sale. I took it to a national hoping to sell it but it shot good enough to keep until I finish my next smoothbore. I have 2 more in the works at the moment.
I just acquired a target rifle from a member of this site) but have yet to receive all of it. It was shipped in 3 packages and suppose to arrive tomorrow. I'm all giddy and stuff. I have all winter to work up loads. Only problem is, I have no place to shoot farther than 600 yds. so I will have to rely on my math skills to get dope on 800, 900 & 1000 yds. That should be interesting.

I went to a trade gun shoot over the Labor Day weekend and took the Tulle. After I shot, I had a fella come by my camp dragging a Northwest Trade Gun. He wanted to trade it for my Tulle. Queen Anne L&R lock with a .62cal x 42" barrel.

It has an ash stock. It's been a few years since I've seen a gun stocked in ash. I figured it was a trade gun match so I swapped him.

Ash certainly makes a very unique stock. I'll bet it is VERY durable. Those straight, square butt stocks, are they hard on the cheek or do you shoot them in the English style? Head held high with a straight neck?

I was concerned about that square cheek. I had planned to dish out that sharp comb before I shot it. I had one of Curly's guns back in the 80's that was torture to shoot. This gun seems to be more forgiving on the face. I shot it with 90 gr. of 2F several times while "getting into" it without any pain. I guess this has more drop and a little cast off which makes the sharp comb a non issue.

I don't know if you ever saw Curly's personal Trade Gun, but he had a big scoop dug out of the comb area for that very reason!
