Good question...I'd like to know too...I've always assumed it would be something like olive oil, vegatable oil, etc, but don't know.

I actually got a few bags of Oxyoke "oiled patches" that were mixed in with a closeout sale I bought but I haven't used any yet...need to try some and see if there's any difference in the fouling...in the mean time, if anybody does know what the oil is we'd both like to know.

Roundball, let us know how they work. My concern is if the oil will affect the powder charge.

The old Ox Yoke "oiled" patches were oiled with some kind of water soluble oil. Maybe machining oil?

Don't have a clue. But buying them dry would allow oiling your own.
Neatsfoot oil, not compound, works good. Bear oil will work. Sperm whale oil was also popular in the past. But hard to find now.

Once in a while somebody cleans out their attice in New England and a tiny bottle of refined sperm whale oil turns up. Neat stuff. Has to go VERY cold to gum up. If they lightened up on the cachalots for a few years MAYBE we could harvest about 50 or so a year. I know of NO exact substitute. :cursing:
