I have several. Mostly I use mine in the kitchen, but I have a 7" butcher that I changed to half tang and put an antler handle on that I occasionally carry hunting.

As far as being period correct goes, they're not, but you can make them closer by grinding out the fake hammer marks, replacing the scales, and using iron pins instead of brass cutler's rivets.

I don't know of any premade sheaths that are available. I made the sheath that I carry mine in.

Yep, Its all in what you want to pay, in time or money. There are original butchers out there to be had, and reproductions that come straight from the factory with 5 pins and a tapered tang, or you can spend 5 hours trying to turn a sows ear into a silk purse.....

Everything costs, either time or money

Along with the thinness problem of todays Old Hickorys a much better option if you want to make your own is get the Russell Green River knives and handle them up as you please with 3-5 pins which the tangs can be re-drilled for and tapering and/or shortening the tang takes little time and effort.

The blades are available from many vendors and are a bit more expensive maybe than used Old Hickorys but much less work turning them into a PC knife and they are very well made.

as far a the thinness keep an eye out for Tramontina made knives. They look just like Old Hickory but are made by a very famous S America cutlery company. They are still thick like the older knives and no fake hammer marks. I found two at a flea market for $2 each. They also make the most sought after machete in all Latin America. I have one of those also

Amen- those hash marks on an Old Hickory- a lot of trouble to grind off- why do all that work? Better choices.

I decide to try and make a sheath for this knife so I can get some practice for when I get some Green River knives.

I did not have any leather cord so for a temporary fix I used 550 cord but will soon get some leather strings and replace the 550 cord.

I also only had one rivet and will get some moor soon.

As for the belt loop how do I make it? I was going to get a empty 30-30 shell and punch on both end to make the ends round and then cut in between with a knife or razor. How do you guys do it?
