I bought an old Spanish made cap lock pistol. I was not able to make it shoot able. The barrel looks to be in great shape but the tang is welded together. Can I cut the barrel at this point -have it threaded and put a screw in breach plug and replace the stock and lock and make it shoot-able. Need your help. mudd turtle.

No reason why you couldn't, after all, all a gunsmith used to start with was an iron plate. Just make sure that barrel is worth the effort....unless you just like to tinker, which ain't a bad thing.

If you like to tinker with guns (like me), then by all means have at it. However, it sounds to me like a lot of work and expense for a (maybe) inexpensive gun to start with. If you are going to do that much work, why not start with a quality barrel in the first place rather than one of questionable parentage? There is a definite feeling of accomplishment, though, in doing your own repairs. Keep us posted as to your progress! Emery
