I'm looking at a .54 caliber rifle that was made in Olney Texas. Has anybody got any information about the rifle? I can't find a thing.

It is a Mowrey rifle. Supposed to be pretty good guns. Only a few moving parts in them. Check this thread about them.

I have no idea what they are worth. They had one for sale at the local gun shop for $225.00. It was made in Texas had false muzzle with it, in NRA Very Good condition. It was a .50 Cal. this included the mold blocks and some other items.

be reall cafreful with this gun! The one I worked on was a P.O.S and after I had done I could for it.< including new and improved internals and such >. I told the owner,, "I'd only hang it on a Wall!"

I'm not wanting to start a flame war,, with any Mowrey afficianado's,, nor will I get into one or any further discussions!! Just stating the fact! Based on MY experience with a Texas Made Mowrey.. I'd rather just walk away from one, rather than owning it!!!

And seriously,, I always wanted one.. up and till then!

I had a rifle just like this one only in .50 cal about 5 years ago. Paid $125 for it, but as with practically everything else--prices usually go up!

FWIW, I had no problems with mine. The internal "lock" was very simple and reliable (at least mine was). I did think it was kind of flimsy looking inside, and the receiver is only brass, and rather small in size... but like I said--no problems.

It would shot fairly well with conicals (LEE R-E-A-L worked nicely), but I had other guns that could shoot as good or better, so it wasn't a very big deal. Apparently a lot of people think these are "target" rifles. Well, you couldn't prove it by me, but I guess the right combination of load components maybe could've worked great.

I think they are over rated myself, yet people will pay for them. I sold mine about 2 years ago for $250, so either I had a fish on the line, or someone just wanted it badly enough.

Deer Creek Products was "manufacturing" the latest version of these "Mowrey" guns, but I hear they are always backordered and/or hard to get.

Despite my seemingly good fortune with my Mowrey gun, I can't (in good faith) recommend it either way for you... so that ought to tell you how indifferent I really was to the gun... but it did make me a little spending money when I was done with it.

Regards, and shoot safely!

Well Ive only had a few, (7 +Im haveing one made now to replace my old one) the oldst is about 20 some odd yrs old now, Ive put 10,000 or more shots thru it ,Ive used the R.E.A.L. when I used to hunt. For nail it everytime dead center I use 70 grs 3f and round balls. never had a bit of trouble out of any of mine but that small ring cracking that is hooked to the spring. If you get it Ive got some parts if something breaks. Dont know why no one reads these its only been up here maybe 50 times this year Deer Creek stopped makeing them last year along with the H+A underhammers. Whats it worth ?? what he wants for it and you want to pay for it, the Tx is a little higher but Deer Creek used the old Douglas rifleing mch and I have loved the barrels that they made so take a guess from 200 to a little over 500 for that one you show (with that brass back but its painfull to shoot for me.) if it has the loading parts and mould , also you might want to ck Twist about all are 1X66 but a few fast twist 45s got made. Fred :hatsoff: not sure but think GMWW posted pic of 1 I sold him Look at the wood if you find it on here.

ya got me wondering now how good it will shoot , I got the gun in the picture about 10 to 15 years ago and put it in closet guess i need to get it out and shoot it, dont have the loading block or mold with it , its a 45 cal but looks like a slow twist , man i hope its better than y'all think, if it aint all that brass makes it purtty anaway LOL.

I had a .50 cal Mowrey for a while. Bought it used, then found that it wouldn't pop a cap consistently...the hammer didn't hit square on the nipple and the mainspring was too weak. Bought a new mainspring from Deer Creek, and did a little judicious adjustment (bending) to the hammer with a propane torch, a vise and a wrench, and it shot well thereafter. There is something to be said for simplicity of design - it's easier to work on something simple! :winking:

As was pointed out to me Deer Creek is the address ect posted so forget that as of last year. Two Birds I found if Im not shooting for amonth or 2 I undo the spring and no problems. Also you got to use that clean out s once in a while for sure shots. Fred :hatsoff:
