One guys misfires at keeping brass bright

I like to keep my brass well polished. Harder said than done. Then I hade an idea. After polishing all the brass on a Kentucky long, I thought, What if I could varnish it all. I used Grumbacher gloss oil paint varnish. It actually looked sorta OK. It laid out smooth and flat with no color tint. But it is not very wear resistant, and it hates black powder. Seems to cut right into it. So on my Pedersoli Bounty I used polyurethane. That did not work! It flowed well enough, but the finished product looked dull and off color. I stripped it all back off, buffed it back to mirror, and went looking for a new answer. Somewhere on this forum I heard about Blirz Brass Shine cloths. I just got them. Haven’t tried them yet, but from what I’ve heard, it’s good stuff.

You could possibly use some cheap, inexpensive hair spray. It might not last very long. People I know would use it for a fixative on certain kinds of artwork. Then again, they weren’t taking that stuff to the range or out hunting.

Doubleduce 1 I have used hair spray to “fix” charcoal pencil etc. works great and it’s cheap but it.won’t flow, think car paint. I am looking for that brilliant shine

Eeesssh! All that "modern" stuff, poly, etc., doesn't 'go' with muzzleloaders! Some guys like polished, others like to let it mellow-yellow! Good luck either way, whatever floats your boat!

NeverDull is awesome!!! Love it. Having said that I like to let my brass patina with age and then for some unknown reason I get the urge to polish it. Must be from my navy days.

I have never dull for the Harley, we use Brasso for everything brass.

A product called Semi-Chrome is a good German made paste metal polish I used on the motorcycles. I used Never Dull wadding to keep the Ercoupe shining. Juice can run out of the Never Dull, don't know if it would hurt the wood's finish. Paste stays where you want it.

Never dull works good. If the brass gets too crusty, carefully apply ketchup... It will remove the crustyness and allow you to shine it much easier.

The new ceramic car polish liquids are way tougher and longer lasting than wax and shine beautifully. You might want to try Meguiars and see how your shine hold up. It is fantastic on car finishes and chrome.

Gawd ... I hate brass trimmed guns, but unfortunately I have a few ... 2 brass barreled firelocks too!

On a few flint muskets or rifles I solved the brass' issue by replacing the brass parts for steel ones - works for me, LOL! I darken the brass on the others so I never need to polish them.
