Spent a hour turning a OO spout, cut the horn, threaded the inside of the horn......then when I went to thread the spout, the die just ate the wood, :cursing:
I have some older aged OO, and will try the spout again......anybody have a YouTube link to doing this?
I searched and couldn't find one...

1/2 of my threading jobs go bad....... :surrender:

Osage orange, I think.

Kaintuck,

Osage may simply not take threads very well. My experience with it is very small, but it doesn't strike me as the mind of wood that takes carved detail well, despite its weight and density. Are you having the same kind of problems with other species?

Well, I’m full of dumb ideas. Maybe try cutting the threads on a metal lathe. Or maybe try heat tempering the wood first. A little beeswax rubbed on might help it cut smoother. Maybe the grain is oriented in the wrong direction. No guarantees..Just Brainstorming.

It will take finer threads OK. Coarse threads might be difficult as they take a bigger bite. Save the dedicated wood thread cutting tools for soft woods. I generally reach for taps and dies intended for metal when I do hard woods. OO is very versitile for many projects.

That's probably the reason you don't see many wood screw tip horns on originals. Usually tips were horn and some with deer antler. You can usually thread the Hedge Apple wood by using an adjustable thread die.

Rick,
I know someday I will need to invest more into horn tools than my #1 hobby toolset( flint rifles) ...and threader set up will be next!
I have some success, with standard hole drills, then the sae thread dies....it might be density differences in my OO pieces...and yes, I will try and get a few pics up....
The sae taps work fine in/ on the horn.....but a wood piece is a gamble.......
Just thinking out loud here :stir:
