I plan to build a rifle using Chamber's York parts, but doing the stock from a blank so that I can adjust its drop and length of pull. However, since this will be must first build, I am reluctant to take on the swamped barrel inletting and ramrod hole drilling.

Can you suggest alternatives to doing these operations myself? Are there folks who will do barrel inletting and rr hole drilling and who can you recommend? What are typical leadtimes?

Chambers will do a pre-carved stock, leaving the butt for me to finish to my preferred LOP, but I wouldn't be able to adjust the drop. Considering this is my first build, this may be my best option, even though the fit of the resulting stock might not be perfect, since I'm quite a bit taller than average. Any thoughts?

Thanks for your advice,
Don

Don, send me an email and I hook you up with a guy that does that work. He does all of my inlet work, good price and perfect work.

Why don't you ask Jim do the barrel inlet & the RR hole & channel & you do the rest ? Just saw cut the butt part & leave you plenty of room to adjust to what You want.

Having hand inlet my last barrel and drilled the RR hole, I elected to have someone else do the next one. Dave Rase of Bremerton, WA did it for a custom profile O/R barrel for me with RR hole for $65 and did a spectacular job. Heck, even at minimum wage I can't beat that with hand tools. I like other parts of gun building and prefer to let someone else do that for me. His e-mail is:

Fred Miller did mine (and the ramrod channel) for $75 back in 2005.

Many pros farm out their inletting to him.

Fred has done some for me also, he does a marvalous job. I have a Jaeger here I am building for me that he did the RR hole & barrel inlet & a Lancaster to do that he did the barrel & RR on it.
He does top quality work.

Fred Miller has done a few for me also, but that was over 10 years ago, then I got too busy with family matters and work to build any rifles. I will be retiring at the end of February, and will be getting back into it.

Thank you all for your replies. Fred Miller seems to be a popular guy! I'll contact him.

I asked Chambers about doing only the barrel and rr hole, but they said the best they could do would be to leave the butt untrimmed. I'll talk to them again and see if I misunderstood.
