So I get up early, drive 30 miles to the range, set up about everything I own to try some new style Turkey Targets, do any final fine-tuning, etc.

I check-patched the bore on my .62, poured in the powder, seated 3 Oxyoke wonderwads, poured in the shot, reached for the Circle Fly OS cards.............................................#%&$#%@&%$# !!!!!

I don't know if you've ever tried using just overshot wads, but it sure simplifies loading. I discovered the benefits of using overshot wads only when I ran out of (forgot) overpowder and cushion wads over 30 years ago. So long as you remember to pack the overshot wads...and powder...and shot...and spare flints, you'll always be good to go.

Coulda used a handful of leaves or grass for the overshot. Wad it up and shove it down over the shot it would be tight enough to hold the shot in place.

Right...and I tried a variety of things while I was there...ie: a single wonderwad as an OS card...some thick paper cutouts from an NRA target, etc...and they all worked to varying degrees of course as far as simply shooting a smoothbore goes...but there was too much pattern variation from shot to shot compared to the little Circle Fly OS hard card...and the whole point of going this morning was to fine tune things with a new Turkey target, so I was just wasting powder & shot...I'll be going back in the morning.

3-4 years ago I went to the range with a .45cal flinter...got all set up, reached over and picked up the red box of Hornady...........490's !!.........wasn't any improvising that morning...the good news is I didn't have a rifle to clean.

I haven't seen this anywhere in a while. You can make your own wads if you are of a mind to. I forget which size saddle punch will match which caliber, but I think a 5/8" saddle punch will fit a 20 ga. The covers for 3-Ring binders make really good overpowder wads. Shirt cardboard or the covers from those little binders with the folding metal thingeys (warning - technical term) will make overshot wads. If you are looking for cushion wads you can use 1/2" celotex board. That's basically what the manufacturer's use.

Thanks Many...actually, I'm fine with the wads I use...my problem this morning was that instead of being within arms reach at the shooting bench, they were 30 miles away back at the house!

Been there and done that. :( I really try now to have a seperate bag for each gun for that very reason. If I have the bag, I can shoot. :winking: But, still the best laid plans of mice and men..........

Read of similar in the old days and the remedy proved to be shewing pieces off the ball till it fit! :rotf: What the heck, it'd produce your own fillings for the teeth you wear down!! :blah: :rotf:

Not the first or the last to forget something needed when headed to the range or hunting. Tees you off though.

Might as well roll with it. You will do it again.

Years ago I remember driving an hour plus to park and go deer hunting, had everything but the boots. Nice snowy mountain morning. A pal did the same, had everything but the weapon. Murphy never sleeps, Good smoke, ron in FL

:rotf: :rotf: :rotf: :cursing: Done that drove an hour one way to a woods walk all duded up tommyhawk, powderhorn, shotpouch ,throwin knife,....Forgot me musket ,....DOH!!!!!

greetings clutch,

nope, never put your teeth into a jar with your balls. the teeth will nick the balls and that ain't good for accuracy..

bout the worst thing i forgot was, one time was loading up the suburban to go shooting. got a small elec scooter. loaded up all the juck required for 1/2 dozen guns. put the scooter back in the garage, hopped out to the truck and drove off. was almost to the range when i noticed i left my leg at home. (dbl amp rt leg)

now there ain't nothing funnier than a one legged old goat trying to hop on a walker carrying all that stuff to the firing line.

thank God for young fellas, they saw me, came over and carried all my stuff, hung targets etc. they only had one 22 between them. well, that day they burned more black powder than most people do in a lifetime.

what could have been a miserable day, was one of the best days i had in a long time.
