just wondering if anyone has tried other big game such as sheep, goat or maybe even grizzly or buffalo? what was used and how did it work out?

I took a large elk cow with my .60 cal flintlock in Arizona back in 1998.
That is the biggest animal I have taken with a muzzle loader.

Regards, Dave

Hunted mountain goat in Colorado in 1992..Took 3 years to draw the license...Managed to harvest a nice goat at about 40 yards with a 58 cal Hawken flinter I built just for that hunt...

In 2003, hunted bighorn sheep in Colorado high county...Took 14 years to draw the license...Managed to harvest a nice 3/4 ram with at 80 yds with the same 58 flinter deep in a wilderness area on a 13 day hunt, most of which was spent packing out camp and sheep...This was my toughest and most rewarding hunting experience and not because I was successful in getting a ram...

Would like to hunt, not necessarily harvest, a moose and mountain lion...Regularly hunt elk, deer, antelope and bear with the same flinter.... :winking: ...The Best...The Lizard...

I took this bison off a preserve in TN back in 2001; it was something that I always wanted to do since seeing the movie "Jeremiah Johnson".

The Particulars are: CVA St. Louis Hawken, .54 caliber, 100 grains FFg powder, T/C maxiball, and a CCI cap.
I took my first shot at 60 yards, and thought I had missed as the animal (cow) showed no reaction whatsoever. I reloaded and took a second shot, and she humped up a bit. She then let out a heavy sigh and I saw an aerosol stream of blood come out her side, so I know I hit her with the second shot. I reloaded for a third shot, but had trouble as the other bison had started milling around her.....I finally got a clear shot and fired my third round. She took a few steps, then started to stagger.....right over a small cliff! They had to bring in a front end loader to get her out. When they got her back to the lodge and were processing her, I found three bullet holes on the left side (where I was aiming) and two exit holes on the right side. The three on the left side were within 2" of each other.
One tough critter!

I would love to do a bison hunt just can't afford one "dag nab it" But beautiful animal you got there i bet the hunt was a blast well maybe some day

Have taken five elk now, four cows and one bull. All with a .54 rb. All good shots except the bull. Hit him directly between the eyes and he rolled over on the ground and sprang right back up on his feet. He was doing his best not to fall as he spun around in circles and twisted this way and that while I reloaded and got him through the lungs. One thing I learned, between an elk's eyes is solid bone, all the way to the back. His brain is actually a little higher. Bill

Around here, the "other big game" is feral hogs. And in most states that have them, there is no bag limit, and no closed season. A recent magazine article claims that 35 states have huntable populations, and they are expanding their territory at a prodigious rate. Get out and bust some!

Enjoy today,

Joel

I ordered some from Graf & Sons some time ago - yes, shipped. They have their own Brand which I think is made by Swiss - good stuff. I ordered 4 lb.s - don't know what the deal is now after 9/11 though... but you could check. http://www.grafs.com

There is a place in Decatur that carries real BP, (that would be kind of a long haul for you), but I think you'd almost be better off to put an order together with some friends and get 10 pounds or so in one shipment. Reduces the HAZMAT charge if you spread it over several pounds. My son-in-law and I split a 10 pound order from Graf & Sons, and it worked out to about $13.00/lb.

Enjoy today,

Joel

Grafs gives me good service too.

I took a look at their site and their powder is now in metal containers - mine came in the same kind of poly container that the swiss is packed in... so I don't know if its the same or not.

Their other "private label" stuff is of very good quality though.

on the Graf&Sons site do you have to register in order to view the offerings they provide? I was unable to search the site for some reason.
Thank you for the quick response on the BP on the net and in AL
Thanks All
