This has really been a prolonged build that I've drug my feet on, finishing two other flintlock builds in between. I started it well over a year ago for an antelope hunt in Wy, I got it to the point of being accurate, and ran with it, no finish or dress up. Now in a crazy year its seen more of the country and harvested more game than any other longrifle I've built.
During this build my life has changed significantly as it sometimes does, losing my father who gifted me with the talent & desire to build, moving, another daughter. Its almost like the gun has now taken on a more spiritual role in my life and I keep dragging it out further. Maybe I should keep stretching the build further letting life slowly do the finishing for me. Would be an interesting patina I guess.

Don't feel that you have been slow in finishing your rifle. Some members of my gun club are concerned that I may wear out my Derringer rifle build before I finally finish it. I like my rifle in its present state, so I am not doing much now. It's only been about 30 years and I had daughters to raise, a family to move and a career to finish.

I like the state of completion your rifle is presently in. Take your time.

Why is there no flint in the gun in the picture with the deer?

Banged my hammer off the door jamb of my blind trying to get out. Felt like I was in a Cheech & Chong movie having shot in a small converted ice shanty blind. I lost flint and lead backer in snow. I dont think ill ever shoot another buck from an enclosed blind like that. Or maybe I will, I'll just know more of what to expect next time around.

I used an old 1940s lawn mower deck plate that was all beat up. Saved me some aging effort.
